I had not seen it before so I bought 2 cans to try. I made some tuna fish salad and tasted the tuna after draining. I thought it had a really good flavor better than in water or plain oil. I will buy it from now on.

Italian tuna packed in olive oil is great added to a pasta salad- no mayo.

I've always bought tuna packed in water. For regular "tuna packed in oil," what kind of oil is used, if not olive oil?

Some are packed in vegetable oil. You have to look for the ones in olive oil as olive oil is more expensive.

Yes, it's the Italian tuna packed in olive oil. I usually buy it in an Italian deli.

Had this as a kid. I am Italian (50%). Mom would saute the tuna and then use it as a base for red sauce. Delicious.

There was an inspiring thread about this tuna here some time ago. I wanted to try it, but at 5X the cost of Albacore (which I no longer eat because of the mercury) and 6+X the cost of chunk light, I passed. Even if it was five or six times better in taste and texture, I could pay >$1 an ounce for a lot of things I'd prefer to tuna.
If anyone knows where this can be bought at a discount, I'd love to hear about it.

We love tuna in olive oil and I'm always on the lookout for it at a decent price. To me a decent price is about what you'd pay for a McDonald's burger meal--fries, drink and burger.
I look for Mediterranean brands on Amazon, and they also have USA packed tuna in water in salt free and salted that is very good.
There is one brand (I know by sight not name) that has oil packed tuna with curry and other flavors that is very good.

To me, tuna packed in any oil is a step backwards. I don't like fish and oil seems to increase its fishiness. I fix tuna, when I eat it, with many things to decrease the fish taste. It seems less intense packed with water.
