I wanted a taco salad  today, but I didn't have any chips.  I try  not to have chips on hand  because  I have no self control.  I do like crunch, so I found some corn tortillas in the fridge and cut them into triangles. Now I know you can air fry them, but I didn't want to have an extra thing to clean.  Anyway I just threw them on a foil covered  pan, sprayed them with  cooking oil and baked them in my toaster oven at 375  till they were crisp.  When they were done  I  just sprinkled them with  some pink salt , and they were perfect.  This may seem obvious to some, but it was new to me. 🌮

@QVCkitty1   Not obvious to me, thanks for the tip!  Sounds like it's a good way to use up leftover tortillas before they go bad.

I buy the big bag of corn tortillas and cur some up and bake them in the oven. Usually put different spices on each time I do them. Yes, they really are easy to make. I freeze the uncooked ones in batches.

I've taken crunchy taco shells and broken them up to make nachos in a pinch. 🌮

I love the tip!  Thanks and we will try that for sure.

I love Fritos with taco salad!  I count them out, but I am nuts about them in taco salad!  I never did like that shell they come in, so I was delighted when I discovered a taco salad that didn't have it.

DD and I also use tacos shells---they are so much less salty as well. Have a recipe that I use shells instead of chips too. they are a little thicker than chips but hold up better.

My neighbor's mother makes fresh tortillas whenever she visits and they bring us over about 2 dozen. I then change whatever I was going to have to taco something ... regular tacos, chicken tacos, shrimp tacos or halibut tacos. My husband also puts peanutbutter in the tortillas and eats them up that way.

But when we don't have fresh tortillas I go to the pantry and use these tostado shells for nachos or to crumble up for taco salad. They seem to last forever and cost next to nothing. These were originally an oops purchase by the spouse and it was a good oops.

It works well with corn or flour tortillas.  If I have time when I'm cleaning out my fridge, I make chips out of any that have been sitting around too long.

@kate2357- I love these and use them for a tostada and taco salad. They taste better to me and have much less salt than tortilla chips.  They are really good heated in the oven for 1-2 minutes.

Re: Tortilla Chips

[ Edited ]

when I was a teenager and worked at a small Mexican factory in town--I made those chips every Saturday with the weeks corn tortillas that didn't get sold---that place made the corn/flour tortillas, tamales, taco meat , all from scratch. And had all Mexican women running the whole process. They would very often fix lunch for us and tell me I needed to eat because I was too skinny---was 16 years old------how I loved those ladies and how I LOVED the fantastic food they cooked. Was hard, hot work too. I went home smelling like hot grease from the chips--yuck!!!
