I'll occasionally make popcorn on the stove, using butter flavored oil. However, someone I know insists that the only way to make good popcorn is to use coconut oil. I've never even seen that in the store. So, I'm asking for advice on how you make your popcorn.

All the stores now have coconut oil. You're probably not looking for the right type of container. It's in a jar and it's usually solid, depending on the temp. I get it at Walmart.

Coconut oil is the best. Even that cheap Walgreen's brand p-corn turns out fluffy and almost every kornel pops. I couldn't believe it.

We used to have one of those old fashioned popcorn cart type machines at work- (for the customers who had to wait) the popcorn came in prepackaged packets with coconut oil..it was GREAT!

I have a Whirly-Pop, use non-GMO popcorn, and use either coconut oil (which you can get almost anywhere these days - Trader Joe's, Publix, even Walmart) or Orville Redenbacker's butter flavored oil. I also get Flavasol popcorn salt, and sometimes use different flavored seasonings (Amazon or Walmart) - cheddar, butter, ranch, nacho cheese, chocolate marshmallow, etc.

Air pop it and use a small amount of melted Smart Balance or Land o Lakes Light Butter with Canola Oil over it. I like the butter flavor but not the fat or oiliness of popping popcorn in oil. Not crazy about coconut oil even though it is the trend. Also like the fluffy, hull-less popcorn from farm markets and health food stores.

Re: Those of you who pop their own popcorn

I have a wonderful multicooker pot from the Q's Technique "flame" line. It's a ceramic pot with a vented ceramic lid, and it makes the most perfect popcorn ever in the microwave. I use a T of half butter and half coconut, microwave it two minutes, then add 1/3 cup of popcorn, and it takes 5 minutes. I can also put grated Parmesan in the pot before popping, or cracked pepper. The pot cleans up with a quick rinse in soapy water. Even my Whirley Pop was always getting gunky.

I make mine old style. About 1/4 c vegetable oil, add popcorn, pop and then add about 1/4 c of real butter and a dash of salt.

Except I use virgin olive oil & more than a little "sea" salt.

Re: Those of you who pop their own popcorn

I remember the olden days when they told us coconut oil was "bad" because it was solid at room temperature! My favorite popcorn popper is an old saucepan I have, with a tight fitting lid...
