These house rehab shows make me laugh when they go into a kitchen like mine..

… and say, "Yikes! This place needs to be gutted!" {#emotions_dlg.lol}

Am I the only one working in a kitchen with 1980s cabinetry and counters?

No, I've got it too and still manage to get a meal on the table. Have you noticed that brand-new white appliances are outdated? Everything has to be "updated" before the youngsters can fry a burger.

Have you ever observed that the ones SO fussy about how the kitchen looks usually can't cook!

I feel the same way when I watch some of these shows...last night a couple were shopping for a new home...all they talked about was how bad it was.....and I was thinking how much I WISH my home looked so good! I am in a 1981 built home....no up grades. I have the same stove that came with it! I keep things clean and in working order, but not one to gut my home. I will just move soon in to our retirement home, and then gut out this one when we are out...fix it up and sell it. Not when I am in it!

I decided to update my countertops last summer- I got quartz. Everytime I went into the store they were pushing new cabinets too- I love my oak cabinets form the 1990's! They're in great shape- and solid wood!

Lightning hit our house in 2011. It was pretty much gutted. Courtesy of our insurance company at a cost of somewhere near $280,000 we got a new house, new furniture, new everything!

Before that it was orange! My late husband wanted to put in a tile kitchen. I said, "Over my dead body". I hate tile in the kitchen. I have vinyl because it's easy to clean up.

When I sell it (which I hope will be this year) I will have to update the kitchen again, I guess.

i now live in a retirement home with few upgrades -- do have a dishwasher and microwave. When I went to sell my house in 2011, my kitchen had been totally upgraded in 1991 and I thought was fine except for the countertops. Before that it had not been done for over 36 years -- it was my parents home. When the real estate lady came to call, she said it was a complete tear down -- she claimed that Normal people did a complete upgrade every SEVEN years. However the house sold at above asking price at the first open house.

Most of the people on the real estate & improvement shows all expect brand new complete kitchens with all the bells & whistles.....if you can afford it without going into debt that's great but it isn't realistic for many people who are trying to put children through school/ college and save for retirement too........

Mine too! When we put our last house on the market, I thought the kitchen was lovely. It wasn't new, but it was very pretty. RE lady came in and said, "First thing we need to do is gut and redo the kitchen".. estimate $30,000. She sad it would sell the house in a day. We got a new RE lady. The house sold in a month for asking price. The new owner was going to redo the kitchen… so be it. At least we didn't have to pay for her new kitchen.
