The Pumpkins are Being Picked

There are only two or three pumpkin canning plants in the USA and we live about 45 minutes from one. Many farmers in our area plant pumpkins for the nearby canning factory. The semis full of pumpkins have been going by our house, so I thought I would share the process for those of you who might be interested.

/></p> <p>This is a canning pumpkin. They are not the bright orange like a pumpkin that you see sitting on people's porches and are made into jack-o-lanterns.</p> <p><img src=

A machine comes into the field and separates the pumpkins from the plant and puts the pumpkins in a row.

/></p> <p>The pumpkin picker/loader picks up the pumpkins that had been put in a row and loads them onto a semi. The semi and the picker/loader travel the field at the same time. When the semi is full, another semi takes its place.</p> <p><img src=

When the semi gets to the plant, it is put on a ramp. The back gate is opened so the pumpkins can go on a conveyor belt, which carries them into the factory.

/></p> <p>If you look carefully, the yellow spot and white spot are the cabs of the semis. The semis are tilted back completely to empty the pumpkins. From there, the pumpkins go into the factory to be canned for us to enjoy in our pumpkin pies, pumpkin breads, etc.</p> <p>Pictures are from the Libby plant in Morton, Illinois.</p>
