No such thing? I suppose, only if you have never had a hamburger.

For years my fav was Mel's Drive-in hamburger in San Francisco (the old MEL'S WHEN I was in high school and college), until we moved to San Diego and discovered Hodad's in San Diego's Ocean Beach. Love, love, love their bacon cheeseburger (which was featured on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives).

Yes!! I have to agree.....although an In N Out Burger is pretty hard to beat too!! Both, the best I've ever tasted.....

Re: The Best Hamburger You Ever Had?

My older sister and I lived in Skokie, IL during our childhood, and used to take a bus to and from our home on Saturday to the local pool to take swimming lessons one Summer. One day we were hungry and just stopped in this mom & pop diner to see if we could grab something. We decided to take our bus money and split a cheeseburger and then just walk home. It was heaven, I've never tasted such a fresh, juicy burger before or since. We walked home the rest of the Summer, always stopping to split a cheeseburger. We never told anyone we did this, and we never returned to this restaurant after our lessons were finished for the season.

I have since moved around to other parts of the country, but I have been thinking of visiting the Chicago area once more while I still have the energy to travel and enjoy it, as I am now going to be 60 in the Fall. I will certainly order a burger and a steak or two while I'm there! It took years for it to occur to me that the cheeseburger my sister and I had so long ago tasted was so perfect because it had just come from the Chicago Union Stockyards, and you couldn't get fresher beef anywhere in those days.

Re: The Best Hamburger You Ever Had?

I very seldom eat hamburgers but I grew up in Southern California where In N Out burger is king. I now live in Washington state and Ranch Bacon Burger at Ranch Drive In in Bothell, WA is my new favorite. I ate there tonight!

It has to be SmacNally's in Ocracoke, NC. When we go to the OBX, we usually stay in Rodanthe. Every trip down there, we always drive to Hatteras and take the Ferry over to Ocracoke Island. It's well worth the trip! The burgers are delicious and juicy, the onion rings are yummy. DH and DS love the fries too. The dockside view is fun, as there are boats arriving or leaving with the adventurous for a 5 hour trip, hoping to catch The Big One for their dinner in the GulfStream waters!

Mary, that sounds like HEAVEN! There is nothing like enjoying good food at a water-side restaurant. Thanks for great description{#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}

You're welcome! For anyone going to Ocracoke, definitely check them out. Just park (for free) in the lot by the ferry that goes over to the Mainland, and walk down. They are across from the street from the Anchorage Inn! They also serve fish for the non-burger crowd, freshly caught of course! Smile

For me and my husband it was definitely at Tom Bergin's House of Irish Coffee in Los Angeles, on Fairfax Avenue near Wilshire Ave. I have actually been thinking of driving up there for a hamburger. It's about an hour drive from my home. I wish it were closer to my home.

Tom Bergins is one of the oldest established restaurants in Los Angeles, since about 1936.

If any of you live in Los Angeles, I recommend you make a trip to Tom Bergins. I just checked them out on Google and they have a very good site. Apparently they don't serve food until 5 p.m., but the old wooden horseshoe-shaped bar is open by 11 a.m. Their Irish Coffee is delicious.

Wow! Thanks for the top! The burgers t the Apple Pan re pretty good too...But now I am wondering if it is still around?

stilltamn8r, in case you are still reading this thread, today I called Tom Bergins and found out the "recipe" for the great hamburgers I enjoyed has changed with new owners over the past 15 years. But I would be willing to drive up there to see how they have changed. Also, they do serve bangers and mash which I love, so that's an alternative for me. There is a brunch menu on Sundays.

Thanks! Love a good brunch..I will check it out!

I used to work on the Miracle Mile...........Bergin's bar was the local body shop after work

Yes, I used to live just off Wilshire on the Miracle Mile area and Bergins was a great singles pub. USC students used to hang out there, too. On St. Patrick's Day you would see a line of young people down the block waiting to get in.

Jules5280, who posts here, once mentioned a great hamburger place in Salina, KS, but now I forgot the name! It's supposed to be well known.

Maybe she'll post here and tell us again...

Hahahaha sorry Marien, I just skipped to the end and posted. Yep, it is The Cozy Inn.... people call them to have them shipped on ice all around the country. It was just a few years older than my daddy... if those walls could only talk.

http://cozyburger.com/index.shtml

They have added on newer locations, but the original is in Salina. For anyone driving east or west on I-70, exit 9th street, head south, the Cozy is on 7th... well worth the visit! {#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}

Thanks Jules!! I remember when you posted about it...can't believe I forgot the name...But I won't now... Smiley Happy

Someday when I take a road trip, I'll definitely go there.

I hope you are doing well...as well as possible.. (Hug) Smiley Happy
