Since I can't ever find the spice I'm looking for, I decided to try and organize my assortment. Oh my, I have a lot of spices, some were old and I tossed them, but I still have so many and I'm sure if I toss one I will need I next week, LOL. I'm sure that some of them I bought for a recipe and never used again, so I'm going to try and incorporate these into other dishes. It's frustrating, because my storage space is limited, but I love my spices. Are there ny other spice hoarders out there ?

I buy the resturant size of spice containers and made a spice shelf in the freezer.

Re: Spice Overload !

[ Edited ]

@QVCkitty1 maybe make homemade blends i.e "italian" " greek" "rub for chicken" "pizza sprinkle" to combine some of those bottles for space.

I think the lock n lock spice jars are cool or get a metal board and use magnetic spice holders like Alton Brown used on his show to free up space and make easier to view.

When i view it i use it.

@QVCkitty1  Oh my goodness! I have so many spices! I bought a rack for the inside of the cabinet door, and I bought tiered shelves for the lowest level. Now I can see most of my spices, but I still manage to lose some of them anyway. Smiley Frustrated

Spices are the one thing I've never had a problem limiting.  Due to food allergies, I eat the same foods over and over.

Between that big issue and my husband liking simple, basic foods, I'm not curious about new recipes at this stage of my life.  My 20's was my phase of trying new recipes, but even then anything requiring more than basic spices, was an immediate no.

All of my spices are dated to help prevent a full drawer of old ones.

@QVCkitty1  Almost too embarrassed to admit...... hidemf3.gif

About a month ago, I pulled out a spice & just happened to notice the expiration date was nearly a decade ago. faint.gif

Pulled out another....expiration date 3 yrs ago. Smiley Surprised

I immediately got a trash bag, put it under the spice cabinet, placed my arm into the shelf & pulled/dropped every spice container/bottle (including salt & pepper) into the garbage bag.

On the way to the trash bin, I grabbed my car keys, went to BJ's to only replace the spices I know I will be using frequently or the paramour uses when he's visiting (he does all the cooking).  I had also trashed the spices that he purchased which were NOT expired.  It was only fair that I replaced them (too lazy to check his spices which were a lot).

@ECBG  Never crossed my mind to freeze my spices.   Interesting.Freeze.gif

Lining them up in alphabetical order -- wherever they are stored -- always helps me to locate the one I need, among a too big collection. I need to de-spice and am inspired by posters who got rid of expired spices.

We use a large variety and love spices!  We have all sorts, but mostly no blends (we keep Kinder's basic one salt and no salt versions) because now we know what spices go with regional foods.

I always feel so blessed to have so many new foods and spices to try now that we're not eating out much.
