Re: Speaking of mashed potatoes

I’ve not tried the store potatoes either but my daughter uses the Bob Evan’s
I drain the potatoes place in bowl, in the same pan I cooked the potatoes in I heat milk and butter until butter is melted
Add the hot milk/ butter mixture to the potatoes , whip until creamy , add salt , serve
They are fluffy and creamy

Re: Speaking of mashed potatoes

When I don't feel like mashing them, I use a potato ricer. Then I stir in the milk, salt and butter.

My mashed potatoes end up sticky or pasty. I use the kitchen aid.  Any ideas on why?

@Twins Mom

Could be a few things.

Using the wrong potatoes. Yukon gold and russet potatoes are good choices, especially for mashed potatoes.

Overworking the potatoes.

Not letting potatoes completely drain.

I'm sure ther are more reasons....but those are the reasons I know can cause gummy spuds.

Re: Speaking of mashed potatoes

I added cream cheese to my mashed potatoes for the first time this Thanksgiving.  As usual, I also added butter, a little bit of garlic and onion powder, and salt and pepper.  My daughter-in-law commented on how delicious they were.  I've never gotten compliments on my mashed potatoes before I added the cream cheese!

This is coming from the post on Bob Evans mashed potatoes!

If you are doing mashed potatoes from scratch, a friend taught me a variation.  Add one bar of cream cheese (softened) when you are ready to mash.  I like to whip it all together with a mixer.

The cream cheese adds a subtle, rich, a little different, flavor.  They are really tasty!!

I agree with @kate2357, to be sure you're buying the right type of potato suited to mashing.  A typical round, white potato is the worst to use for mashing.

Re: Speaking of mashed potatoes

@Twins Mom I always peel and cut my potatoes and rinse till the water is all clear, then I boil them.  My mil told me it's the starch that makes them gummy.  If you wash you get rid of a lot of the starch.

You over whipped.  The starch changed to sugar.

Re: Speaking of mashed potatoes

I always add a container of French onion chip dip and butter to my mashed potatoes.  They are just so delicious.
