@debcakes wrote:Check with the DIY stores and kitchen stores. Some of the new Formica is so good, it really likes like something else. My DD moved into a new house and I thought it had granite countertops, but no, Formica. Maybe that would be affordable.
We are getting to replace our kitchen countertop and since we don't live in a neighborhood that warrants high-end expensive stone, we are going with the new formica. They have fancy edges and no more brown lines where they used to cover the ends.

Chant this mantra: I am not my countertops, I am not my countertops......😙
If that fails I like Lolakimono's suggestion for refinishing. Probably works best going with darker finishes.

Many years ago I decided I could not look at my counters another day. I had been following a tv decorator, Christopher Lowell, and he was a big proponent of painting everything!
I went to Sherwin Williams and got a can of Bonding Primer and first painted my counters with that. I then painted them a dark green with just plain old latex paint. I then went to Michaels and selected four small bottles of craft paint in medium and light green shades. I would dip my brush into the craft paint and kind of splattered them onto the dark green. Some of the splatters were long veins and some were just splatters. I then put three coats of gloss poly on to seal and protect.
That was supposed to be a temporary fix. Well it lasted 12 years and held up really well. When I saw a couple of spots that got dinged, I just hit them with some accent paint.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

SO, I am desperately looking for some semi temporary way of both concealing them and making them more functional until I come up with another solution.
Has anyone ever used tempered glass panels, like the ones that are (or were) sometimes used as desk top covers, for kitchen use? All I can think of doing is that or a neutral tile. The wall of the backsplash is very retro, very dated patterned tile, that I love.
THOUGHTS?
Well,if DH gets to dictate what goes on the counters in the KITCHEN, how nice that he is now doing ALL the cooking and cleaning to enjoy HIS CHOICE more! Good for him!!! Tell him I said so please!

Umm have a sincere talk with your dh. Why does he have the last say in new countertops? He has "drawn the line?" Really? There are a lot of really nice formica countertops out there now that are cheap. It sounds like you really don't want to spend much so that is an option. I have seen plenty of tile square countertops and all it looks like to me is the owner just wanted to get away cheap. I'd have a sit down talk with the hubby if I were you.

As RollTideRoll2008 stated there is a topper that goes over your existing counter top. My husband has taken a sudden interest in redoing the kitchen. And he has gone to several home shows. He was quite impressed with the topper. No sure of the name but last show he came home to two brochures about it.

Call in the experts, tell them what you are looking for and they'll find a solution that fits your needs and budget. They aren't really temporary, they are permanent just not an expensive re-do of the counters. They do look like it.

So glad I found this thread, I am going to re-do my countertops & backsplash. The formica has been re-done from the original horrible typical 70s formica to a faux butcherblock. It's so ugly. I love to paint, I think I can paint them, was going to do beadboard as a backsplash.
I'm not into this in particular but here's a pic of painted countertops

This is is the first time in over 40 years of married life that my poor husband has EVER expressed ANY opinion about ANY issue involving decorating. The counters have a “lip” that is flush with the Formica. They appear to have been constructed to “embrace” the Formica countertops when the whole kitchen was installed. He (and I) likes the cabinetry because it’s beautifully done and in almost new condition, although we estimate that it is most likely well over 20 years old.
I do feel quite comfortable allowing him to express one opinion and make one choice every 40 or so years, and he’s already getting quite excited about the decision I’ll allow him during the 2018-2058 era of our marriage.
