Re: Some going......going.........gone restaurants.......

Now that I think about it, I do miss the Howard Johnson's of my youth. It was a great place to go in the sixties for a late night burger snack after the movies. I also would drive down to the Howard Johnson's in Asbury Park (from central Jersey) even during the winter months, with my girlfriend. We would look at the ocean, have some chocolate chip ice cream there, then drive all the way back home again. I also remember a frosty shake they had there for a while called a HoJo, it was orange with lime sherbet or lime with orange sherbet, can't recall which, but it was really refreshing in the summer.

More recent, would be missing Bennigan's. It wasn't gourmet food, but you could always count on finding something enjoyable there for a reasonable price. It was close to my workplace, so often it was a place we would go to celebrate a birthday lunch or a holiday party.

We had a fun car hop place called Char King when I was growing up. You could order from your car or eat inside. The food was ordered by number. Chargrilled burgers. My favorite was the #5 char grilled with hickory sauce. Yum, miss that place. FB has chat sites for people who remember it.

I do remember Steak and Ale. They had the best prime rib in town (KC) where we have good steak anyway. This was 1984 and I remember when Miami Vice was on I was not budging from the house on a Friday night even for prime rib.

Steak and Ale was the first steak house restaurant I remember going to in a big city. There was also a really good restaurant in Oklahoma City that served crepes but I cannot remember the name of it. Think it was part of a chain, but is no longer open. Anyone remember what this is?

Editing this as I think I just remembered it. Believe it was The Magic Pan. Anybody remember this?

I used to live in Orange County, CA and I LOVED the The Magic Pan!

I grew up in Orange County. Was the Magic Pan in Irvine or Costa Mesa (south coast plaza) ?

The Magic Pan that I went to was in Orange. There was a shopping center called Fashion Square with Bullocks, Robinsons and Nordstrom down the street from Saint Joseph's Hospital and Children's Hospital. I was born in Pasadena but moved to Orange County when I was about 8 years old. Great place to grow up! I now live outside Seattle - also a great place to live!

I was surprised that Bennigans closed up- they were always so busy! I think their guaranteed express lunches hurt business. I got several lunches for free when it wasn't served in the allotted timeframe!

The only one on that list that's in this area is Fazoli's - the food is so-so; I wouldn't miss it if it were gone.

Some of the places I do miss are Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips, The Magic Pan (there was one near my office in NYC), and Child's restaurants (NYC).

The best burgers EVER were from a placed called The Hamburger Train in NYC; it was a hole-in-the-wall, but always packed - you'd see news anchors (from NBC across the street) and company presidents sitting at the counter next to typists and secretaries - it was loved by everyone; I can't believe it's gone - it was immensely popular.

Cats3000 - you know, that building will always be "The Pan Am Building" to me - I don't care what they call it now! {#emotions_dlg.thumbup1} Are Hot Shoppes gone? I stopped at one only a couple of times, but can't remember them well, if they were good or bad - in fact, I only remember them at all because one of my cook books is from there.

There's a place in Chattanooga that has a restaurant in a railroad car - The Choo-Choo, I think.

Anyone a fan of Ted's Montana Grill?

I don't really miss the restaurants cited in the article. We generally prefer to eat at local establishments rather than chains (although of course we do eat at chain restaurants from time to time). However, I do miss Steak and Ale. DH and I enjoyed eating there. I always had the "Kensington Cut" steak, a tender sirloin cut flavored with a wonderful, distinctive marinade, and we loved their big salad bar. I feel sad every time I pass one of their shuttered restaurants in metro Atlanta. Some still have the old S&A signs up.

I wish someone would revive Steak and Ale!

I do not understand that if ALL of us wonderful people loved Steak and Ale.........They why did they close.........{#emotions_dlg.w00t} GoodStuff........If you are from the Atlanta area, then you may remember the Steak and Ale that I ate at, and the Bennigan's at Southlake, and one up I 85, past spaghetti junction.........{#emotions_dlg.unsure} But nothing.........and I mean NOTHING would even compare to the original Pilgreen's.........{#emotions_dlg.wub}

I loved Magic Pan, too! I ate many times at the one in Dallas, and went a couple of times to the one in Atlanta. Thinking of The Magic Pan brings back very fond memories for me.

The Kensington Club was my favorite there and still one of the best restaurant steaks I've ever had. Wish I had the marinade recipe. Think I asked the waiter once and believe one of the ingredients was pineapple juice but don't remember anything else. Anyone know what it was?

Also, they did have the best salad bar. Loved their COLD plates, COLD lettuce, and Thousand Island Dressing. Goodness, I'm making myself hungry!
