Explaining that the cost of vegetables fresh, frozen and canned is rising due to California's drought and the NE's excessive rain and lack of sunshine. I can of generic diced tomatoes was $1.49 and I bet it will go up more. I think we will all be tightening our belts.

Shop your local farmer's market & buy fresh, in season. Take it home, prep it and freeze it.
Far better, far cheaper than the schlock at the grocer. Most all of the folks you meet at the market are the growers, themselves. They can tell you how to select, freeze/can and prepare their offerings.
If you don't live in a drought stricken area you don't have to worry about what's available. Corn here will be a bumper crop. It's already 7' high in many fields.

I always have to laugh when people say this, because I've never seen a farmer's market that has cheaper produce than the ones at our grocer's. They're usually 3 to 4 times the price!

Around here the farmers aren't going to have much to sell. It has rained every day - too much water - fields flooded and little sunshine. Then on the other hand - Calif. has this widespread drought. Buying at the farmers market is not going to be an option. One of the farmers who lives near us here was tellingh us that the corn stalks are high due to the rain but there is little corn due to no sun.

Buy local? It's a sad sight as we drive past the corn fields here. The stalks are spindly and bedraggled. We've tried planting tomatoes twice -- lost them both times. Death by drowning. Rice would have been a good crop this Summer.
Small heads of iceberg lettuce were $2 per this week at my grocery store.

No negative experiences for me regarding farmer's markets but I'm in Northern MI. I buy fresh and organic when I can.
I skip the middle man and pay lower prices when at the markets. Inconvenient, probably for some but I make the time and take the effort.
For those who are looking for a market near them try nfmd dot org. Sorry, I don't think we can post links anymore!

We've had a lot of rain and lately really hot weather. This week there was a tornado near our community (which actually did little damage). Despite a strange summer, garden produce is starting to ripen. I'm grateful for the garden I planted and the generious friends who've shared their surplus with our family. Perhaps the Victory Garden of years past will become popular again. . .

I like to shop farmers markets too, but realize this may be regional. I gorrw my own lettuce, as this does well in northern Michigan. I have small green tomatoes but we need some heat and sunshine. I saw a sign posted in a local grocery store that said "sorry for the inconvenience. The price listed for the prok loin is by the ounce, not the pound." It was listed as 99 cents. What?

I love farmer's markets, unfortunately I have to drive to a different state to see one. Cuts down on getting them for a decent price.
