My grocery store always has spatch chickens in the case.  I don't buy them....too expensive for me.

I just buy a whole chicken and a spatch it myself.  They cook great on the grill.

@shoesnbags   I saw it on Food Channel. I love chicken legs/thighs, but DH will only eat the white meat. After years of buying chicken breasts, bone in or boneless, it' was time to get my drumsticks. Cooking the chicken whole, but flat takes the same amount of time as separate pieces.

Yes, I'm familar with that word but I'm not sure where I learned it.  I don't watch cooking shows so I must have read it somewhere.  In any case, I've never cooked a bird that's been cut that way.  (And it is a weird word.)

@Desertdi   I can count on you to help post my pics. Thanks. Yes, that's my chicken, but I tuck the wings underneath to keep them from burning before the chicken is cooked. "She" doesn't look very lady-like in that position, huh?

@Shanus  Yes.  I spatchcock my chicken almost every time I roast it.  Just use a pair of good kitchen scissors like Kuhn Rikon.

I can rub on seasonings on the underside better, and it speeds up the overall cooking time.  It's easy, and my chicken is always delicious.

@Caaareful Shopper   I made the mistake of ordering inexpensive poultry shears from Amazon. I now them on my desk. As long as the butcher is available to cut it, I'll pass. I can cut it out myself with a very sharp knife, but the chicken is slippery. LOL

@PickyPicky3   I've never heard this term before this post. I also am an avid shopper at my local Aldi's but I've never seen this there either. Certainly don't doubt you but at Aldi's you never know what goodies you'll find there.

@Shanus --oh yes--my brother does that with all his poultry --did it with a turkey and cooked it on his smoker---takes less time to cook and I think the it gets cook more evenly too. Plus that thing was DELICIOUS!

Yes.  I've been into cooking since I was a kid so am familiar with the term.
