Growing up there were no A & W root beer stands in the area.
So when we went on trips during the summer. My Dad would always have us be on the look out for an A & W stand so we could have root beer floats in the afternoon.
My Dad and I used to go grocery shopping every Friday night. He would always get vanilla ice cream and a bottle of root beer. He would make popcorn and we would watch the Flintstones together.
It was the only time the kids were allowed to drink soda.

I don't remember getting them at a restaurant/diner. However, at home, we had them occasionally but more often we had root beer floats or we often used Faygo Strawberry or Orange soda instead.
I don't remember the Cherry Lemon 7 Up but then we didn't really drink 7Up at home unless we were sick.

I grew up with floats being popular, but have never consumed one!
I love Coke, but am allergic to milk, so ice cream doesn't have much of a place in my diet. I always thought it odd to combine the two; about as odd as Laverne DeFazio's combination of milk and Pepsi!
Never had a cherry lemon 7up either. I've never had a cherry Coke, or any other cherry soda combination, same with vanilla soda combos. For me it's always just plain original Coke, period.

I used to love to get vanilla syrup in a coke.

You "stole" my post! I wanted to mention Brigham's Lime Rickey. There was a Brigham's near where I lived in Boston...all dark wood and stone-tiled floors. The Lime Rickey's were served in a glass inside a silver holder with a long heavy ice cream float spoon.
I was a purist though....no raspberry for me just the lime version...
My other standby was the A&W Root Beer stand float that was served in heavy frosted mugs brought out to your car. The rise of Mc Donald's killed the frosted glass A&W float.

Growing up my dad owned a small town drug store. We had an old fashioned soda fountain. We pumped coke syrup along with cherry, lemon and my favorite iron port. Coke floats were popular. My favorite memory were frosted root beer mugs. ALL costing a whopping five cents! Wonderful memories.

My whole family (with the exception of me and one of my brothers but including all the spouses who have married in) is OBSESSED with Coke, and my father is the biggest ice cream fan in the world, so all of our summer gatherings have included Coke floats and root beer floats forever.
And if you haven't tried a grape soda float—AKA a purple cow—you're missing out.

Growing up in the 50's and 60's all of the drug stores where I lived had soda fountains. Getting a coke float was a treat. Gosh I miss those days and those soda fountains.
