Re: Refrigerator advice - side by side or bottom freezer?

I vote bottom freezer, if I've said it once I've said it a dozen times to my husband, I love my frig. You don't get into the freezer that much. At least we don't here.

I have the French door and bottom freezer and love it. So much room compared to the old side by side. However, I chose NOT to have the water and ice in the door because of the space it takes up. It's no big deal for me to get ice from the bottom freezer, and I sure like the extra space in the door.

She's right.

Re: Refrigerator advice - side by side or bottom freezer?

We have a Samsung French door 4-door in stainless. With the ice and water in the door. IMO, it's the best fridge on earth. 32 c.f.

We had a side-by-side and I couldn't fit everything into the fridge. Every time I cooked for holidays and for family dinners, I was forever asking my sister, "Will you put this in your fridge and then bring it when you come for dinner?" I was asking my neighbor to store stuff in her fridge. I hated that thing.

Since we got the French door, I finally have enough room. The little wine drawer (or soda drawer) holds a sheet birthday cake or a pizza. Or a relish tray. It's just perfect. I like having the freezer on the bottom. I also like having the drawer in the freezer. I have never had a problem with the alarm going off; I don't think I've ever heard it. It's just perfect.

I am 59 with a bad left knee and a bad back. But I'm very happy with our fridge.

Re: Refrigerator advice - side by side or bottom freezer?

We had a French door fridge with bottom freezer in the 80's & I loved it. My husband insisted we replace it with side by side when it stopped working. It wasn't long before he realized he made a mistake. Our next one will be a bottom freezer. I told him if he dies before the side by side, I will use it as his coffin and then buy a fridge with bottom freezer and French doors!!!

Re: Refrigerator advice - side by side or bottom freezer?

I just replaced my 20 yr old side by side with french door/freezer on the bottom. I love it! The side by side shelves are just too narrow when cooking for my large extended family.

We never had a bottom freezer with french doors above until we moved into this house. It came with a new frig/freezer unit - Samsung. I seriously do not like this unit, but must admit part of it might be the brand.

The french doors: the left one has a vertical strip that pushes out to the right and closes flush with the frig. Thing is, you MUST close the left door first, then the right door. If you don't, the doors don't seal properly and the darn frig starts going ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. Another downside to this is that because you MUST open the right door, even if you want to open only the left, you're dealing with an energy inefficient unit. I have no idea whether other brands are made like this. Say away from Samsung. (We love all of the other Samsung products we own.)

2 things to consider about the freezer: (1) What is the production of the ice maker? Our ice maker is sa-low and because we do not have a side-by-side, we don't have access to ice from outside, nor a water spout outside; (2) and, I have a horrible back and really miss being able to put my favorite items at waist, chest or face level. Something to consider if you're in your late 40s or 50s.

Good luck!

I have a new 4-door french door Samsung frig. How old is your Samsung? Mine doesn't have any issues with the doors. I can open either door without a problem. Maybe you should call a repairman to look at yours?

I have my s/s; I have had it for 35 yrs since hubby insisted that is what I needed. His sister got the French door with the bottom freezer. She loves it and every time we visit, I am envious. Next time I replace, there will be no s/s. She has no water in the door, but ice maker inside.

Love our Samsung 4 door! Freezer on the bottom has two doors making it so easy to get to the food. The top is huge and has some clever slide back shelves for taller bottles. We got this last December when they first came out and absolutely love it! Side by side - NEVER!

Re: Refrigerator advice - side by side or bottom freezer?

I have wondered about the bottom freezer units when a person has a bad back too, because that is my issue. We inherited our current appliances when we moved into this house, and it drove us nuts the first year or so, because every single appliance has a nag alarm. Dishwasher nags when it is finished, and won't shut up until you go and open the door. Same with the microwave...now, I admit that a ding or two is a nice reminder that we put something in there, time to get it--but when it goes off again & again & again and you can't get to it right away, you just want to take a sledgehammer to it! Finally I thought to google the brand/model on the internet, and found a way to stop the nagging alarms. Bliss.

We have been putting up with a frustratingly too-small fridge ever since we moved in here, which we can't change because the kitchen is also too small. It has been a thorn in our side for so long, we have made up our minds to buy a huge honkin' fridge when we move. It will be a behemoth that needs its own zip code. The point I'm making is, it is good that you are taking the time to research now & ask people their different opinions on the ones they've tried, rather than endure the wrong unit later. Good luck, I hope you find the perfect fridge!

We had a bottom freezer on our GE when I was a young child in the 1950s! I've had both types and the bottom freezer is my favorite. My access to the refrig part is important as this is what we are in and out of most often. All my food is within reach and at eye level. Much better to see leftovers and use them before they become science experiments. I also have the ice and water dispenser with my latest model. I had a side by side refrigerator and neither side was large enough for large bowls of food, frozen pizza boxes, etc to get in and out. Love the bottom freezer...this is my second one and that's not counting that old GE my mother replaced only 6 years ago!!

I agree with your assessment of a bottom freezer refrig. We bought a Kenmore this summer . We couldn't fit a French door one into the space but the freezer has a drawer that slides out easily. We did not hook up the ice maker as there are just the two of us and we do not use much just make trays and store a little extra in plastic bags for company. This model does not have filtration, we do not have a water softener and we have very hard water so an ice maker would prove to be more trouble than it would be worth. We also keep a small chest type freezer for extra bargains & garden produce.

Yes, I love a bottom freezer model! I can see everything in the refrigerator.
