Re: Question about Publix Stores

Seems like there is a Publix on almost ever street corner in Florida! They are not all the same...some much better than others. The one my mother likes to use is just OK. I prefer the Whole Foods near her but have been in some really good Publix stores.

Re: Question about Publix Stores

One of the major improvements that Publix is supposed to have made down here in Southwest Florida is installation of on site generators so that if the power goes out during a hurricane or bad tropical storm, they remain open and functioning with ice making and all.

Re: Question about Publix Stores

Publix has always been the favorite grocery store in Florida. They have some smaller, usually older stores, in some areas. Many of their stores are very large with pharmacies, bakeries, delis with ready to go meals, large beer and wine sections and a liquor store next door. The one near me has a butcher shop and custom cuts your meat. They carry many organic items called GreenWise. They are the best and the prices are comparable to other stores. They are always clean and customer service is the best.

Love Publix. Tidbit: DH 's grandmother almost married founder of Publix in Winterhaven, Fl. Why she didn't? She didn't want to marry a grocer!

Re: Question about Publix Stores

I live in Central Fl. and I have only seen one Publix close in my area. They closed because a road was being redone and they actually moved the new Publix just 2 miles down the road. That has been the only Publix I have seen close, but the new store was larger and better looking. Plus it had better parking and better access from the road!

I love Publix for their fresh produce, BOGOS, and they have a great bakery! Everyone in my family always asks for their birthday cake to come from Publix. I believe it has something to do with their buttercream frosting.....amazing! My fave is the little puff pastries with the cream cheese and guava. Not to mention they have a great deli!

Stores are always clean and shop able.

Seniors - the main population of Florida love Publix because they tend to be smaller stores - less walking - and they are willing to pay a little more for that. I am not so I used to shop Sweetbay who have now been taken over by Winn Dixie. Many of the younger, healthier retirees and still working population go to walmart but I don't like the crowded Walmart store in my town and infrequently go there. I am just hoping they keep the Winn Dixie open as we get 10cents a gallon off on gas for every $50 we buy in food.

Florida has the greatest proportion of people who are at least 65 (17.3 percent) in the US. Hardly the main population of Florida; just the section of Florida where you chose to live.

Re: Question about Publix Stores

I wish they would close! They are a monopoly in Florida. You have no choices except for specialty stores like Whole Foods or Fresh Supermarket which are even higher priced than Publix.

We moved down to Florida a year 1/2 ago from NY. In NY there were so many different supermarkets there was competition. A&P, Shoprite, Stop & Shop. Then there were the speciality markets. You had choices of where to shop at reasonable prices because they were always trying to bring shoppers in that week.

In Florida, Publix! That's it. They are on every corner. Sweetbays closed so your only choice is Publix or Walmart. I will not shop for fresh food in Walmart.

Granted Publix is clean and neat. But I do not like their meat (overpriced and lousy). They have a very small choice of organic vegetables. Beware of Greenwise, its not really organic. Look at the label.
