Question About Testing Temp-tations

Has anyone ever home-tested pieces for lead? I wondered about this because of all cracking and crazing mentioned.

Has it been assured on TV that it's lead-free?

Re: Question About Testing Temp-tations

Years ago, this was the first TT "scandal." There were lots of posts about lead content.

I bet those OPs are still around.

Re: Question About Testing Temp-tations

I guess we can take this for whatever it means......

Are my Temp-tations® ceramic dishes safe?

Temp-tations' porcelain, stoneware, china and earthenware products meet all Federal and state government standards for lead safety. All Temp-tations® product lines are tested by accredited independent laboratories before they are shipped to the U.S.

Thanks, KM, that's at least something.

But I do know there are other brands that have said that but the home tests say otherwise. I hope someone here has an input on that.

Hi terrier,

Do you know if the TT people ever addressed that and said they now make sure there's no lead?

It doesn't say that it's lead free, so what I wonder about is, if you use a dish for serving purposes (as we've been advised to do by some people) and it's slightly crazed, could there be any lead in it that could leach into the food? I don't even use mine for serving unless I put a napkin in and use it for bread or rolls. {#emotions_dlg.confused1} They don't say whether or not it's lead safe if it's cracked....

You're right! Hmmm... I'm glad you caught that. From what I've heard, if it has lead and is cracked (or I would assume even crazed) it would not be safe to use. Maybe, like you say, bread or rolls with a napkin.

terrier suggested earlier I only use the pie dish for serving after it was baked in a pie tin, so that's what I plan to do.

This issue does rear it's ugly head every so often here, for the last several years.

Kittymom posted the "official" statement always given out by TT when the topic comes up on their FB page.

People here and on FB have posted both ways. Some claim to have tested, and some say they found lead, other say the product tested safe.

I suppose the only way to be sure of the actual levels would be to have them tested in a qualified lab, and even then, different samples might test differently. I would be surprised if some didn't come back with higher numbers than others. In that case, it would be hard to know whether the product in general was "safe" or not.

My feeling is if this is a subject that really concerns anyone, they should probably stick to old reliable (made in USA) products that have never been in question surrounding this issue.

They used to claim the products were Lead Free until a forum poster reported a positive test for lead with one of those home test kits from a local home improvement store and filed a complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The report is still there. Several more posters also tested. Some found lead, some did not. About a week later, QVC quietly removed the lead free claim from their website and the product became Lead Safe. Nothing was ever said on air. That indicates to me QVC does not test for lead since it apparently had no idea if the product was lead free or not!
