I've not heard of that.  Here in the South we eat black eyed peas for luck.

Best wishes for the new year.

The Bavarian kraut is sweeter and has caraway seeds in it.  I always add onion and a little extra caraway seed and cook in the pressure cooker.  Soooooooo good!!!

We ate the black eyed peas a couple of nights ago so we didn't have any for the killer crock pot dinner hubby made yesterday for New Year's.

He had a big chunk of pork cut up into 4 pieces, added an apple, pear, onions, cabbage with boillion water.  Towards the end added a bunch of speatzel.  Holy cow was it DELICIOUS and plenty of it left over, warming again in the pot right now too.  Can't wait for dinner again tonight!

@In-x-s  I add a chopped onion and apple,  a Tbsp of brown sugar and a tsp of Carraway seed.

the pork and kraut is apparently a German/Pennsylvania Dutch tradition and ever since I heard about it, I'm afraid NOT to have it on New Year's Day LOL.   After all, I am German Smiley Very Happy

LOL, it's definitely a regional thing.   I've never heard of it either, and we ate a lot of it growing up.   Hubby's not overly fond of it tho.  It's good in Bierrocks and on a toasted bun with a hotlink and cheese.
