Just a heads up....our icemaker broke in our fridge so we resorted to making cubes in a few old trays we kept "just in case".  By chance, a glass of ice water was sitting on the table in the sunshine (after melting) and I noticed tiny white particles gathered on the bottom of the glass.  Looked like a mix of salt and sea salt.  Melted a few other cubes in glasses and sure enough same thing.  Needless to say we got rid of the old trays and ordered several stainless steel till we get the ice maker repaired.  Our plastic problem is no joke.  Scary stuff.

Unless you are using bottled water, that "crud" is from the water itself.

I live in a large city...and my tap water is actually GRAY.    Yeah, the city claims it is "filtered"...but I have a few questions about that.

I hope bottled water is better than my tap water. When my tap water is heated it tastes like bleach. Not good. I don't make ice cubes, I just put the glass of water, etc. in the freezer for awhile and it freezes on top. This way it doesn't dilute what I'm drinking.

I have been using plastic ice cube trays all my life. Never had that problem. I have 4 in the freezer.

We have a Reverse Osmosis System that I fill the trays with. The white stuff is most likely minerals.

When we remodeled our kitchen we didn't hook up the ice maker. We didn't want to buy it but that's how the refrigerator came during Covid.

The reviews on ice makers in refrigerators say they don't work so why bother?

I would buy an ice maker machine before I would pay to have the ice maker fixed. My sister has one.

@bargainsgirl.  It could have been lime or calcium residue from water used in the trays and not necessarily from the plastic.

There are filters on our refrigerator for the water and icemaker, I've never seen an issue with the melted ice. The icemaker in the motorhom is not reliable so we make ice in trays, I have a countertop icemachine but space is too precious to carry it with us.

Re: Plastic ice cube trays

[ Edited ]

We didn't hook up our icemaker  - wanted more freezer space - so I ended up purchasing silicon ice trays.

I've always been tempted by stand alone ice makers, but wouldn't used them often enough to justify the purchase (or the price!)

My doc told me I have to dring more water. Even though I prefer bottled water, I've been filling a 20 oz mug at the sink and guzzling it down. Rarely taste it....but I do know that our community removed the fluoride from the water so it does taste a bit better.

@bargainsgirl

Highly unlikely it's the plastic ice cube trays.  It's your water.

I seldom use ice.  I don't want an ice maker and if it leaks it can ruin the floor.  Happened to a friend of mine.  I use plastic ice cube trays but usually if someone comes over and wants ice in their drink.

Flocculation--particles in the water coming together?

We have an ice maker in the fridge and a stand alone and I keep them busy!  I love having all the ice I want!  I absolutely love that ice maker!!!!!

We also have a small under-counter water filter and that is wonderful too!
