Oven Racks

Over Easter was at my SIL's,,,redone kitchen about two years ago. Has lovely everything. I noticed in her ovens, one of the racks in each oven had a "step back" section in the middle of the rack. In other words, there's like an empty space in the center of the front of the rack,,,,,maybe a few inches back. I'd asked her what it was for and she had no idea. Now I know you ladies will be able to help me,,,,I can't wait to tell her why the rack is like that!!!!!! I myself read all info with a new appliance, but I'm sure she doesn't even know where her instructions etc are!!!! TIA very much
