My experience is that it depends on oven design. If the silicone mat is continual touching the bottom burner in spots when the oven is in use, the mat will develop "wear" in those spots and will eventually become "thin" or "worn through" for lack of better term. If your oven has enough structural lift between the burner element and the over "floor" to allow an inch or so air space between mat and burner, there should not be a problem.

I've never heard this. Can you explain why? Is there something different about using silicone in this type oven, and does it affect the food in any way? I'd really like to know. We do have a convection fan and I was just about to put the silicone in today.

My bottom burner is concealed. I had an oven liner on it and it burned, so now it's on the bottom oven rack. I've had no problems with my convection oven.

You can find them online ast Miles Kimbal. Pack of 2, can't recall the price but I have used them for years. I buy a bunch at a time. Cut to fit.
