OT/getting walnut hull stains off fingers

Does anyone have the key to removing walnut hull stains off your fingers? I have a walnut tree in my yard and was removing the outer hulls a couple days ago. I wore heavy gloves, but, alas, when I finished, I find I have stains on 3 fingers. I scrubbed my fingers with every type soap/scrub type cleanser in the house, stains still there. I could let the stains just fade on their own, but, found out last night there will be a funeral I will have to attend in a few days, so I want the stains gone. Anyone have the cure? I am also going to google this problem, but thought I would ask here also. I know there are some knowledgeable folks on the boards. Going for a walk now, will check later for any responses. Thanks for your help.

Re: OT/getting walnut hull stains off fingers

good morning, Snickster.. I shouldn't have posted as I don't have a solution for you, but I wanted to tell you what I would do.. I'd eat some red pistachios - you won't be bothered with the walnut stains after that. Smile

Or take a nice long bath and soak them.. wash a lot of dishes.

I hope someone has an answer for you.

I googled and it looks like you are short on this issue.I'm sorry. If it was me,I would just dip my fingers in some Clorox. But I'm just a risk taker ...lol. (When you see those stains, just think about the good black walnut pound cake and black walnut ice cream you can make!!)

I would try paint thinner or turpentine.

Try nail polish remover, rubbing alcohol or hair spray.

My friend works in a nursing home and they can't go to work with stains like that. She has been desperate and soaked her fingers in bleach. I'm assuming it is diluted with water, but don't remember.

It's harsh, but she had no choice.

When I'm desperate to get the underside of my fingernails clean, I dip them in Clorox bleach. No permanent harm. If all else fails, put foundation or concealer on them and don't wash your hands.

I wonder if soaking in peroxide would clean them up? That wouldn't be as harsh as bleach.

Re: OT/getting walnut hull stains off fingers

I found this with a quick search:

"How to Remove Walnut Stains From Skin (updated 4/17/14)

1 ~ Begin the cleaning process by squirting a liberal amount of lemon juice onto your hands. You can use bottled lemon juice or juice from a fresh lemon or two. You will need one half cup to a cup of lemon juice for this procedure.

2 ~ Add a few shakes of salt to your hands as well. If you're measuring, this would probably equal about two tablespoons of salt.

3 ~ Rub your hands together vigorously once you've applied the lemon juice and salt. Continue until the stain is gone. According to Bob Villa's website, the combination of salt and acid from the lemon will remove the stain, but it won't injure your skin.

4 ~ Try rubbing toothpaste on your skin if the lemon juice and salt treatment doesn't work. Use an old toothbrush to rub the toothpaste in a small circular motion. Continue this method until the stain has disappeared completely. Any brand of toothpaste can help, but you will find the most success with a type of toothpaste that contains baking soda.

5 ~ Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with one-fourth cup of dish detergent in a shallow bowl. Use the old toothbrush to apply this mixture to your hands. Scrub the stain with the toothbrush using the same circular motions from step 4. Continue scrubbing until the stain has begun to go away. Try this method if the aforementioned remedies have not worked.

6 ~ Wash and moisturize your hands after you've attempted one or more of these methods. Although none of these remedies are dangerous for your skin, the rubbing and exposure to moisture has the potential to dry your skin out and possibly chafe it. Washing your hands will remove any remaining cleaning substances, and any general skin moisturizing lotion should help to protect against skin irritation.

TIPS AND WARNINGS: Try one of these methods as soon as possible once you notice the stain; the longer the stain sits, the harder it will be to remove. Wear rubber gloves next time if possible! Also be aware that any of these methods should help; you don't have to necessarily go in the order mentioned in the article."
