New Beater for KitchenAid Mixer

I see Kitchenaid has a new beater coming with their KitchenAid mixers.  It's a Pastry beater meant to cut butter/shortening into your flour.  Has anybody tried this yet?  I didn't get to see the part of the presentation where they demo'd it, but I'm skeptical.  It's shaped like the standard beater with bars groing across the inside open area.

Speaking of beaters, I use that flex-edge beater for pretty much everything that one would use that type of beater for.  I can't figure out what I might use the regular beater for.  They showed her using the regular one to shred meat, but I think I would just do that by hand with forks.

@Icegoddess  I watched the demo, and I was interested; but, I make my pie crusts by just cutting the Crisco into flour with a knife and adding salt and water by hand. It comes together in a matter of minutes. I just don't see getting out my mixer for that. I don't make double crusts or add other ingredients to my pie crusts. That might be a consideration.

Re: New Beater for KitchenAid Mixer

@PA Mom-mom I buy my pie crusts.  Never mastered making a good one, but I doubt that's the problem.  I use a pastry blender for biscuits when I make those. I think a food processor will do the same thing as long as you don't let it run too long which overdoes it and makes it tough.

It just seems to me, the beater would just chase the flour around the outside of the bowl without something to force the butter/shortening through.

I love the stainless steel beater that is available now with those mixers. I wash by hand, but, you can put in dishwasher. doesn't hit the side of the bowl either.

Big improvement

@SharkE? - Did you buy the new pastry beater separately?  I already have the stand mixer so I went to kitchaid's website.  They want $49.99 (sale price) for that beater.  That's kind of high.

You can find the new beater for about $25 on Amazon or many other retailers.  The reviews aren't great.  I'll stick with my pastry cutter.  Perfect everytime.
