My 20 year old built-in dishwasher is dying. Any recommendations for a specific brand that works well and should last a while?

Look at Bosch. My Bosch is over 12 yrs old. It was not the most expensive model.  It cleans so well and is quiet. I will be buying another Bosch if this one ever wears out. It is still like new even after all this time.

My most recent  dw (bought 7 yrs ago) is a Bosch/Kenmore too and it is very quiet and cleans well. I bought it a Sears.

I have a Kitchenaid that I bought a year ago after having had a Kenmore for about 16 years.  I'm very satisfied with the Kitchenaid so far.

Bosch has the highest ratings for dishwashers, and they have great customer service.

In 45 years  in this house, we're on our third dishwasher.  First was Whirlpool, next two General Electric.  No problems ever.

Bosch.  Had mine in my old house for 10 plus years and still working great.  Moved into a different home and have a Bosch (though smaller) from the previous owners.

I havw  a Kitchenaid and love it! It has the multiple settings that I need. The racks are very sturdy and hold my Temptations and corelle dishes. Pots and pans fit fine. When I was searching for a new one someone on the forum gave me that suggestion. I had no idea that the insides of the dishwasher varied so much in capacity and lay out. I also wanted the controls on the front panel not inside on the top. It was a convenience "thing" for me but again we have multiple schedules in our home so it was a function that I wanted.

We have a two yr old Kitchen Aid that we like a lot. It is our second KA. The first one lasted 18-20 yrs. This model is so quiet you almost wonder if it is running.
