Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers DISCONTINUED

I just found out that Nabisco officially discontinued its Famous Chocolate Wafers this summer! These are the cookies I always use for my chocolate pie crusts and anything else requiring chocolate crumbs, which makes them a necessity for holiday baking. When I couldn't find them anywhere while trying to stock up recently, I searched online and made this discovery. Very sad.

In reading through a few articles, it seems that Dewey's brownie or hot chocolate thins are supposed to be a nearly perfect substitution since the cookie size is about the same and the boxes are typically 9 oz, just like the Famous wafers. I'll be trying both Dewey's chocolate flavors in the next few weeks to test the results.

Has anyone used Dewey's chocolate thins for pie crusts? I'm guessing they'll work just fine from an overall recipe standpoint, but I'd love any feedback on the flavor if you've tried them before.

I read about the discontinue earlier this year.   We always used them at Christmas to make our family tradition ice box cake.   Fortunately we have some in reserve so will be ok this year but would love to hear your feedback on this Dewey product.

What a bummer! Those Nabisco wafer cookies are the key to the Carvel copycat crunchies that are in their ice cream cakes. Should have known something was up when I had to go to six different stores to find them earlier this year.

May have to look into Dewey's for the next bday cake. Thank you for sharing the news. I hadn't heard it yet & probably would have been going crazy trying to find them.

Holy Cow!    I used to make my (famous) RUM BALLS out of those chocolate wafers.     They were mostly for the company Christmas party, tho, and I have since retired...

For baking...you could substitute vanilla wafers, and a LOT of cocoa.

Not only are those gone, but I can't find Nabisco chocolate graham crackers anywhere either.

@Ainhisg - Yes, a couple of the articles I read had noted that regular chocolate graham crackers seemed to be in short supply this year. They suggested chocolate Teddy Grahams or other chocolate graham cracker-style cookies as a substitute, if it helps.

I never used Dewey's in making cakes, but I have eaten them. In my opinion they leave an aftertaste I did not like. Never bought them again.

@Desertdi  I use to have a manager who was famous for her rum balls.  When she brought them to the office we all got drunk just from the "aroma." Smiley LOL

NOOOOO! I love those! I used them so often for my cookie crusts. Oh darn! But yet, they keep making so many Oreo flavors.

@loriqvc Try using Oreo Thins instead especially for a crust but even for the icebox cake.  There is very little filling, so the whipped cream will make this cookie soft like the wafers.  You could scrap the filling off the cookie as well.
