Re: My first attempt at Egg in a Hole!

We called them "toast cookies" in my house. I'd grease the pan w. a teaspoonful of real butter and lightly sauted each side of the bread, broke the egg into the "nest", and covered the pan to steam-poach the egg. Also did the same with the cut-out. Nice reminder!

Re: My first attempt at Egg in a Hole!

We sometimes do it with pancakes. Fry the egg, turn it over, then pour pancake batter over it. Everyone loves them. I am sure they are called something other than egg in a pancake, but that's what we call them. I love egg in sourdough "holes".

dooBdoo,

Cinnamon sugar.... YUM! I will have to remember that!

Hi, oceantown! Oh, yes, I'm a big fan of cinnamon sugar on toast and on these little egg concoctions. I think some of it comes from memories of my mother making cinnamon toast and from-scratch cocoa when we needed cheering up.{#emotions_dlg.wub} Maybe not the healthiest addition, but in moderation it's a winner.

I fixed them for my daughter when she was little. They were called "toad in a hole" back then.

Boop

Yes! Grandma and Mom called them "Toad in a Hole." They also made Welsh Rarebit, but called it Welsh Rabbit.

Re: My first attempt at Egg in a Hole!

Thanks, everyone, for your great contributions here! I enjoy reading the family memories of this dish and the different names & methods of prep.

dooBdoo,

Yeah, it does not take much, but a little cinnamon/sugar is yummy.

I do remember having toast with cinnamon sugar when I was a kid.

cookie5,

Pancakes--wow I never heard or thought of doing that! Interesting, and it sounds yummy. Yes, sourdough is my favorite bread, and I have been making it for years.

I grew up on these and loved them. It has been years I need to fix again but nothing compares to the ones made by my Mom.
