Re: My first attempt at Egg in a Hole!

Chips, oh I like the name "peek-a-boos"! I like the idea from you & DiAnne of buttering both sides of the bread.

I can't believe I got the edit to save. Anyway, this is my finished product. I did flip it over to cook the top, and then turn it over again onto my plate. The bottom of the bread was toastier than the top of course. Kinda like the circle and partial circle I cut out.

Next time I am grilling the toast before adding the egg.

Re: My first attempt at Egg in a Hole!

When I was little my Dad used to make these for me on Saturday mornings when just the 2 of us were awake. He was in the Navy so I always grew up knowing these as "a one eyed sailor." Still refer to them by that name to this day, good memories as he is no longer with me.

I cooked on cast iron, which I think works very well.

if you have old welch jelly jars they are the perfect size to make the holes.

Re: My first attempt at Egg in a Hole!

My grandson and his other grandparents call them bird's nests. I had never heard of them 'til grandson requested them so had to call the other grandmother to find out how to make them lol.

Re: My first attempt at Egg in a Hole!

Like Pink56 my dad was in the Navy and we also called these "one eyed sailors". However I don't remember my dad cooking them, my mother always did.
