I have been meaning to try this! The bread I used is small, it is homemade sourdough in the bread machine. There are different names for this, such as Egg in a Basket. I think next time I will toast the bread in the pan for a minute or so on both sides, then add the egg.
Photo to soon follow.
Anyone else make this? Do you have any tips?

i do use a shot glass to make the hole.....it seems to be the perfect size. i make the hole and then lightly brown on both sides before i add the egg. i like mine a bit on the runny side. sometimes i flip it, sometimes not. i also put the small bread circle in the pan to toast to use for dipping into the yolk.

Awww, Gazelle, that sounds like such a sweet memory. I love hearing all of the different names that families used for this.

I lightly butter the bread on both sides and toast it in pan. Make sure the pan it hot before adding egg so it does not run under toast.

Sunshine, I used a very small juice glass. I pressed it into the bread two times to make the hole larger. My bread was a 1 lb loaf, so the slice was pretty small.
I think I will toast the bread a little like you did, before adding the egg. I don't want the egg to be over-done, but I like the bread toasty.
When I made this the bread had a nice little buttery toasty taste & crunchiness, but it does not look very toasty in the photo.
Thanks for your reply and your great tips!

That's what I do, too, DiAnne. My mother used a small juice glass to cut the opening, and that's what I've always done. We toast the cut-out circle along side, sometimes sprinkle lightly with a cinnamon-sugar mix kept on hand for cinnamon toast. Funny thing ... we never really called it anything that I can remember. I'll have to ask my siblings.

just made these this morning. We call them ""peek-a-boos"" in our family. I butter both side and grill them a little like grilled cheese and put the egg in. I just cut a hole in the bread with a knife. Love them.

DiAnne, good idea about toasting the bread first. I did not want the egg to be overcooked! And the pan temp is important too. Thanks!
I am sure annoyed that photobucket is not cooperating with me. I tried to edit my photos and re-size them but it won't save my changes. I don't want to post a photo that is huge.

you are welcome oceantown!
love the bread to be a bit on the crunchy side......and love dipping it into the yolk. personally i dont let the pan get too hot and i dont mind having the white run underneath the bread a bit......it gets cooked and no one sees it. i like mine to be cooked through, but prefer the yolk still on the runny side and bright yellow on top if possible.
i have always called it egg in a hole, but some people refer to it as frog in a hole (with the yolk being his eye peeking out).
