Missing Ingredients Making Salads

We belong to both Sam's Club and Costco.

We have been members for many years to Sam's. I really liked the store. When I was working I always went out to lunch and it was always a rush. After seeing the nice selection of items, I started to make my own salads for lunch. Sam's had such a nice selection of items to put in the salad. Like 5 bean salad, pickled beets, marinated mushrooms, marinated asparagus and marinated artichoke hearts, along with cottage cheese and a large selection of varied fresh produce.

My salads were something that I looked forward to.

Several years later we joined Costco because it was alot closer. The selection of items wasn't nearly as much as Sam's  but I didn't care I just stocked up when I went to Sam's.

Now when I go to Sam's or Costco the selection is disappointing. Sam's used to have a choice of at least 5 different types of pickles - whole, sliced, gherkins, spears and bread and butter.  Went yesterday - there was one type of pickles. And two types of whole olives. There are artichoke hearts in water. No other jarred items that I used to put in my salad.

Costco is the same. One type of pickles now. There are artichoke hearts in water. And they used to have olive spread but it is now gone. They do have 2 types of whole olives.  No other jarred items that would go in a salad.

They both have romaine lettuce and tomatoes. Sam's has more of a selection of fresh produce. Costco it is more hit or miss with their selection.

I am wondering if this is temporary. Since both stores seem to be affected. Or does my salad making days have to learn to live with lots of lettuce and tomatoes.

Re: Missing Ingredients Making Salads

This is interesting.🤔 It is possibly a supply chain issue, or simply supply and demand.🤷‍♀️ We just celebrated Memorial Day so MANYYY salads were enjoyed.😄 I am certain it is temporary!🥰 Hopefully, this will be resolved soon for you, because I eat salad at least three days per week so I empathize with what you are experiencing!😁

Re: Missing Ingredients Making Salads

Publix sells all of the items that you mentioned, varieties of pickles and lots of olives even the blue cheese stuffed olives, jars of marinated vegetables and all different kinds of lettuce and bagged salad kits. And of course they sell any thing else one would want for a salad.

I have Costco and Bj's wholesale club memberships. But in reality I purchase very little from either store. With only two of us I think the fresh produce would go bad before we could eat it.

Re: Missing Ingredients Making Salads

Each day more and more new products are introduced, and when it comes to the warehouse clubs, I think they only stock what they know moves quickly and what they can obtain at a good price.

I'm not someone who would use most of those ingredients in a salad.

I agree those seem ingredients seem available at most grocery stores. I think groceries stores are carrying more pickles than ever before, with the pantry stable jars, the refrigerator jars, and individual pouches.

@drizzellla   I love the kind of salad you are describing. I call them kitchen sink salads.

GREAT, my stomach just started growling.

Yes, I know our local grocery stores would have those items. But since I was in the habit of making a salad every day for lunch and sometimes dinner, I would like buying the items in 34 or so oz jars. And they were about $4 or $5 a jar.

If I bought them from my local grocery store it would be about 12 oz for $6 or $7 a jar or more.

OH YES, we bought the Dill Pickle Salad all the time. Really liked it. Haven't seen it in over a year.

I have a premade Kale salad in the refrigerator now.

But even the selection of the premade salads has decreased. There used to be quite a choice at Sam's. Now it is the same 4 or 5. Costco has 2 premade salads.
