Good morning, My DH and I are moving into a rental house this weekend. It has a microwave with a metal rack in it. It sits in the middle of the microwave. I have never seen this before. Do I put my plate, coffee mug, etc. on the metal rack? It does not have a plate on the bottom that turns. Can I place anything on the bottom of the microwave or do I have to use the rack? Thanks in advance. I'll check for replies as we drive back and forth moving in.

I have not seen a microwave that doesn't have the spinning plate.

Did it get broken perhaps?

Early models may not have had one. I had to pause and turn things by hand to help even cooking. I guess I'm dating myself.

You can put your dish, mug, etc. either on the floor of the microwave or the on the rack. Many units are made with the rack so you can do more than one thing at a time, but it's also removable if you have a large, full dish of food. If the microwave has a little raised piece in the center of the floor with some notches cut out, that means there's a turntable plate that should go there, so you might want to ask the landlord where it is. If it has been broken, he/she needs to replace it. If the floor is even/smooth all the way across, it doesn't have a turntable.

I used to, too, way back in the early days....such a hardship, right?

Remember how expensive microwaves (and VHS players) were back then, too?

My (new) microwave has a wire rack in the middle of the oven, but it is only used in the convection cooking setting. It is to be removed during microwave cooking.

Thanks for clarifying that! Microwaves don't like metal.

Yes, I do! And you're right: it only happens once.
