My over the stove microwave died after 4.5 years. It replaced one that lasted 19 years. It was working perfectly then all of a sudden it starting making a very loud humming sound and nothing would heat up. So I have it unplugged just in case it may be a fire hazard.
The local appliance store had one in stock of the same color and model that bit the dust. It gets installed next week.
I had read that new appliances don't last as long and microwaves last about 5 years now. The prices have really increased. It was $300 4 years ago and now it's $450. I didn't realize how much I use the microwave.

@CoffeeNut Sadly, this is the trend with many of the new appliances. They do not last as long as they once did. I suppose the companies decided they would have a higher profit margin if we all had to buy appliances more often.

Mine died a while back. Haven't gotten around to replacing it yet since I'm still in no hurry for contact with people I don't know. I still have it plugged in since I'm always using the light and timer.
I bought a smaller, lower wattage counter microwave for now. Realized I mostly used the microwave to heat my milk for thirty seconds to take the chill off the milk for my coffee.

My GE microwave was around 23 years old and had to replace it a couple years ago. I replaced it with another GE. I think the sales person said it should last around 10 years. I use mine all the time. Just that and my toaster oven.

That's funny, my friend puts cold milk in the coffee and puts the coffee in the microwave for 30 seconds.
Same principle but a different thought process.

@Etoile308 That's exactly what I do for my morning coffee. First I put hot water in the cup to heat that, then add milk and microwave for 30 seconds. I probably don't need to heat the cup as the micro will probably do it. I like my coffee very hot.

Along with the refrigerator, a microwave is the must appliance for me. Would be replaced very quickly if my current one dies.

That's a coincidence, @CoffeeNut . Mine died two weeks ago. When I pulled out the paperwork for it, I saw we had purchased it 23 years ago. That's a long time for an appliance that gets used almost daily! We replaced it with one that's almost identical.

Funny mine was also a GE, I think the Profile series. It lasted 24 years.

We replaced our microwave a week ago. This is the 2nd microwave we've bought since our kitchen update in 2015. It is the most used appliance in our kitchen.
