husband is a chef and we need new countertops. He veto marble and soap/sandstone because pourous, absorbant, shows knife marks and stains easily
I said "why are all the countertops in Italy marble then?" because they are and I love them
He still says absolutely not. They are not practical and since he does all the cooking, I am not getting my gorgeous marble countertops

I have granite in my new home. I don't like it at all as the color is not to my taste. I plan on changing it out to a man made non-pourous material ASAP.

I have a cultured-marble surround on my bathtub. A few years ago, I placed a bottle of lotion on it - and several numbers that were on the bottom of the container - were left on the marble. Could not remove it.

Saw an article online yesterday about marble kitchen counter tops "trending" in 2017. I am 100% uninterested in "trends" but I do love the look of marble- just not too sure about in my kitchen.
Do you have it? Do you like it?
Who cares what is trending? Get what you like. Quartz is beautiful, easy to care for and durable. Granite needs to be sealed, and marble isn't as strong and could crack.
ITA!
I was in a quandary when trying to decide on a new countertop. Just like you, @violann, I thought I wanted marble...until I talked to a few stone people who turned me off - because of staining, etc.
I went w/ quartz and couldn't be happier.
Good luck, & happy shopping!

On the other hand, you can go with marble and "embrace the look" that will result after a little wear and tear.
I have a friend who is not the most domestic person in the world, but fell in love with the look of marble. She knew it wasn't the most practical choice in the world for her, but she went for it anyway.
That's not a choice that I would make, but it is another point of view.

True,10 but if you are putting in a new kitchen you want it to look current and not something that was in 5 or 10 years ago.

My neighbors matching townhomes are original, so when I decided to re-do my kitchen, I visited them for more authentic ideas.
The one unit with marble was a MESS - they were about to remove it. Totally stained, cracked, chipped.
I ended up getting Shaker style maple cabinets painted sage green with quartz countertops that look like Carrera marble. I have the beauty of marble, but the durability of quartz.
Here is an example (not my house)...
this is what we are lookin at

go with quartz or silestone counter tops. we did our kitchen over 3 years ago and i decided on quartz. i read the reviews on marble saying that it was porous and stains easily and needs maintance at least once a year. it's some kind of sealer taht has to dry thourghly b4 you can use it. so i went with quartz. i got a beautiful sand design with blue sapphires in it . just great.SIL just got quartz cuontertops that a re white with grey veining and sparkles that look like diamonds scattered thru.

My husband and I redid our counters in November. I originally wanted marble. It was not recommended for a kitchen by anyplace we shopped at or in various magazines that I looked at regarding the pros and cons of various materials. The reason was it's too soft of a material for everyday use like a kitchen gets, and such a big area.
But then I see it on home shows all the time so I don't know. As it turns out, none of it appealed ot me once I saw it in person anyhow.
