I have 2 of these can openers. They are very easy to use and I can put them in the dishwasher. I threw away my electric one because I had a difficult time keeping it clean.

Portable Can Opener, Black

What brand is that?

It says Swing-a-Way embossed on the side of it. I probably purchased it at a mart type store or maybe the grocery store. I have had these for about 10 years or so. I noticed that Amazon sells them for about $6.

Thanks. I found it on Amazon. I've got several good choices now.

I've been using one of those for 50 years......still make my coffee in a stovetop perc, too.

I enjoyed the Kuhn-Rikon can opener but for me the blade dulled in a year or two and was no longer effective. I found it easy to use; my husband, even with coaching, could not make it work.

I use my kuhn Rikon more than anything, but have one of these that may be easier to turn for people with arthritis, the handle folds out and is a swivel handle. The clean edge openers are wonderful and never get nasty like the old fashioned ones.

After buying about 8 different kinds of can openers, I found Kuhn-Rikon Ultimate Can Opener and have never ever had any problems with it! It has so many options that you can use with it, I enjoy the way you don't have to touch the lid after opening the can, just grab the lid with the "pinchers" and toss in the garbage! I highly recommend this brand. Mine is still going strong after years & years of use. I have bought so many for family members and they love it too!

I also have a Kuhn-Rikon that I have really enjoyed. I've been using the same one for about 10 years without problems. I also like the 'safety lid' aspect of these, as opposed to the old ones, like the Swingaway shown, that not only makes sharp edges but compels the lid into the contents.

Back when I got my Kuhn-Rikon safety can opener I even got an extra one in case something happens to mine (I do weird stuff like that) and the first one will probably outlive me! It's a very good brand. I have many Kuhn-Rikon products in my kitchen.

OXO is another outstanding brand. They make a ton of different stuff. I have even more OXO in my kitchen.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to order the Kuhn-Rikon. I appreciate all of the suggestions. I know OXO is a good brand, too, but their smooth edge can opener is more expensive than the Kuhn-Rikon.

Not sure the name but it is battery operated. It looks like a mouse to a computer and you place it on top of the can and it moves around all by itself. Fun to play with. I have one in red... think I got if from the website pulsetv dot com. I had to buy more than one for gifts after the family saw it and wanted it.

I have the EZ-DUZ-IT Deluxe Can Opener that I purchased on Amazon. It's made in the USA and is so easy to use that I don't even bother with my electric can opener any more.

I have a Swing-a-way my grandmother bought for me almost 49 years ago. I'm still using it, and have never had a problem with it. Love it.

Namealreadytaken and kitty60, thanks. That's interesting then, that the reviews say that. I do always read the directions. With the clean edge of the Kuhn Rikon, would I be able to put the plastic lid on the dog food can, or would it not grip? I guess it doesn't really matter since I would only be using it for that if the electricity went out, but I'm curious about that.

I haven't read through all the replies yet, so maybe answered already. Yes, you can put the plastic lid on over the can. I didn't really understand the concept either, before I purchased one of the newer can openers that don't cut the can. It sort of unrolls the can top from the body of the can. I still don't understand how that works, or how a can can be completely sealed shut before using that gadget to get it open. But, the gadget doesn't have any sharp cutting things that rotate to cut the can. And once the lid of the can is detached, neither the lid or the can edge are sharp. Huh? How does that happen, lol. I don't know, but I love it and been using it for years. Have no problems getting the lid lose, or grabbing onto the lid once detached to throw it out.
