@greamy, I occasionally have one stick, and find the back side of a kitchen knife blade wedged between top and bottom, and twisted, opens it easily.

FWIW, I never microwave in mine, never put in dishwasher, and am careful not to put liquid in that could contaminate the gasket. But I live alone, so that's easy.

In fact, I'm moving soon, and may not even set up my microwave, as I'm not sure they're good for food. If you're not supposed to heat up breast milk in them, how good can they be for the rest of our food?

Oops, sorry for going off-topic.

@summerwind, there is a simple explanation for the concern about microwaving breast milk. From the FDA:

Heating breast milk or infant formula in the microwave is not recommended. Studies have shown that microwaves heat baby's milk and food unevenly. This results in "hot spots" that can scald a baby's mouth and throat.

I found lock and lock to be garbage.  Breaks so easily and stains terribly.

Oh I completely beg to differ! I have had L&L containers for about 10 years now. I threw out all of my other plastic containers and only will use these. I've never had any problem with any of them breaking. Yes, 10 years of use with my HUGE set and never has one cracked. Staining? Never. I just don't know what to say to people that make these complaints. I am not careful with mine. I throw them in my dishwasher, freeze them, accidentally drop them, all with no problems. And to address the OP, I'm afraid its what another poster said about your cheese. Its seen its better days, toss.

ID2, I totally agree with you. I threw all my old plastic container's away when I got my first set of L&L. I have had no issue's with them all. The L&L web-set just had a 70% off sale and I went a little nut's, and bought 10 more set's.

Brandiwine,When I use my L&L for leftover's or to freeze in, if I make a lot of Chlli or red  sauce's, I alway's wait until the food has cooled, and have never had a problem with staining. That was a big concern when I purchased them. I was really pleased to find out that they don't stain.

@Love4cats do you reheat in them?  I often put leftovers in my round ones...say spaghetti and meatballs.  Won't reheating in them stain them?  I own a clear set from long ago that is messed up inside.  I admit I didn't let the food cool down totally.  I will from now on but hubby like these for work.

Anyone see the set of holiday gift bags/bowls today? I ordered those as we need new bowls that size and those little bags can be used for gifts...no one is getting the bowls LOL!

Generally we have been very pleased with Lock & Lock.

They have prevented many rows with people (E.g. mother-in-law) who otherwise do not close containers properly.

But after a few year's use we often see whitish deposits on the inside.

They don't come off with washing.

And only poorly with scraping.

So we end up removing them from the kitchen and using in the workshop for non-food itesm.

I think it is more likely to be the plastic decomposing rather than food residue, but I cannot be certain.

Has anybody else had this?

Has anybody worked out what it is?

Yes....I have some that this has happened to....my husband uses these alot for reheats of lunch foods.

Love L&L but lately I have been seeing too many wrong things with mine. I also have these ungodly white marks in mine. Looks like I left powered sugar from not washing good. Then there are the lids that are breaking. I have several of the sets with the pop up lids and have noticed that they are not sealing tighly any more. Once I press them down I see it comes back up. This also happens on the large bins where I store sugar flour etc.. Not sealing properly on the sugar can cause a family on ants to venture inside.  Never could use the marinated set because the top would not seal to the bottom. Couldn't send it back because I had it over 30 days. Also the nestables are great but I have lids that never stay stack. Just what in the world do you ladies do with all those lids that wants to fall all over everything? Smiley Happy
