List your 10 essential spices to have on hand.

[ Edited ]

If you could have only 10 spices or seasoning blends on hand for cooking and baking, which would you choose?

salt

parsley

garlic

paprika

turmeric

oregano

No particular order.  Hi @house_cat .  Always a good question from you!

(edit:  I chose not to get caught up in semantics - I took it as "to spice", as in, "to flavor!  to add zest!  to add zing & excitement!")

@house_cat

Can we expand to say "seasonings" as some are herbs or blends? (Before anyone starts to "nitpick" about whether something is a spice/herb).

Spices, sans herbs & S&P. (Believe me, they all get a workout in my kitchen!)

apple pie spice

allspice

turmeric

curry

cumin

nutmeg

ginger

cloves

paprika

coriander

cayenne

cinnamon

pepperoncini (red pepper flakes)

#14 - anise, which I use infrequently.

And my favorite blend ~ Cajun

Herbs on the other hand....

bay leaf

basil

tarragon

oregano

thyme

dill

sage - another infrequent one

rosemary

parsley (for when I run out of fresh)

garlic powder

Besides the usual spices like cinnamon, nutmeg,  I like a mix i.e. Mrs. Dash's salt free.  Like the onion&herbs, garlic&herbs, Italian Herbs, Original, Steak. Chili spices. These have a nice mix of different herbs/spices.  I also like the Chinese Five Spices, Indian Red Pepper paste, red pepper flakes.
