Publix is offering cooked Lamb Shanks with rosemary and mint!   Ruprecht is the brand.

Have you had Lamb cooked like this?

What are your thoughts?

It sounds ideal for 1 but I've only had leg o lamb with garlic and Osso Bucco  shanks.

Love both other flavors!

i LOVE lamb shanks.

they are easy to make, especially if you cook them low and slow.

if there is a butcher, i ask him to cut them in half because they fit better in a dutch oven or a slow cooker. sear them first with spices (salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, tumeric, saffron), add fresh onions/garlic, then cover with water and slow cook them. you can add a spoonful of better than bouillon beef if you like.  the broth they make is so good.  i generally serve them with white basmati rice OR dilled rice with lima or fava beans.

i dont care for mint jelly with my lamb, but you could serve it if you like.

All the lamb 8ve had in the last 15 years, has no lamb flavor.  It tastes like veal.

I talked to an Eastern NM sheep rancher and she told me rancher are raising a new variety of sheep that can be used for either their meat or fleece.  They are the ones that have no flavor.

I wonder if you can still buy New Zealand lamb?  I haven't looked for any.  It was always so good.

I've made Osso Bucco and I loved it.  Not familiar with rosemary & mint!   I agree that it makes the best sauce/gravy in the world!

@Kachina624  I love New Zealand lamb too. Our grocery stores have them for sale around Easter time. All cryovaced and a deep red color.

I'm pretty sure that New Zealand is going into winter season as the US is going into spring and that's when the lambs are harvested. I love it with fresh garlic and rosemary, salt , pepper and olive oil. YUMSmiley Happy

@Kachina624  I get New Zealand lamb chops at BJ's and they're delicious! They don't have them every week, but they've got them more often than not.

Not sure I've had lamb shanks---but can cook those tiny little chops to prefection---and they taste like lamb and I get them from AMZ Fresh. In fact they are on my xmas day dinner menu. I use my ninja outdoor grill too. I've had leg of lamb before---

Would the lamb be rubbed with rosemary or simmered in rosemary?

I've never used that spice with lamb.

Leg of lamb has garlic slivers in slits in the meat.

Re: Lamb Shanks

[ Edited ]

Funny story, when my hubby's younger brother married years ago, his wife would cook on occasion lamb shanks for Sunday's dinner, after several years of this my brother-in-law casually mentioned to her that he really didn't care all that much for lamb but ate it to appease her, she in turned started laughing and said she didn't care for lamb either but cooked it because she thought he liked lamb. Maybe it was the way it was prepared, who knows, end of story, LOL.

I myself have never eaten lamb that I am aware of.
