I've always put them up, thinking more water would get to them.  DH happened to grab something out of the dishwasher and said he almost cut himself and to put the blades down.  First time in 40 plus years.  Anyway, then I happened to read the same thing in a magazine article.  I've never cut myself, but will change my habits if it gets things cleaner.

I've always put my knife blades down because of the obvious... the possibility of cutting oneself taking one out.

I always put them up, but in one particular spot in the dishwasher........and I'm pretty much the only one who empties it.  I usually cut myself chopping veggies.......maybe using the wrong knife?  Actually looked into getting a cut proof glove.

Always, the sharp blade pointing down.  Cutting yourself while reaching into the dishwasher and getting blood all over your clean dishes doesn't make much sense.

Also, if you put them handle down, when you remove them, you're contaminating the now clean blade.

I've never thought of ever putting them with the blade pointing up, if for nothing else than safety.

We put them down. My aunt taught me to do that. We try to wash our better knives by hand.

Butter knives up, sharp knives down.  I don't wash prep knives in the dishwasher.
