Re: Kitchen aid mixer...do you prefer

The glass bowl is heavy even in the 5 qt. It is beautiful but I don't like it for every day use however, I think the weight is a problem and I worry about chipping it when it gets banged around--and they do when you are getting cookie dough out in scoops and pouring things out. I can't imagine how heavy the 6 qt one is, and that band on it looks like it could work loose too.

Kitchenaid mixer - Spiral vs "J" shaped dough hook

I would go for a mixer model that uses a spiral dough hook. It kneads much better and with less strain and motor heating on the mixer than the "J" shaped dough hook.

.
The spiral dough hook presses the dough into the bottom of the bowl and kneads back and forth through it.
.
The "J" hook beats the dough against the side of the bowl and the dough climbs up the hook.
.
These YouTube videos show how each dough hook handles the dough during kneading.

I have a Kitchenaid 5-qt bowl lifter model that came with a "J" hook and I found a KA Spiral hook that fits it. My mixer runs cooler and with much less motor strain while using the spiral dough hook. The spiral hook seems to develop the dough faster and with less heating of the dough than the "J" dough hook.

STOP! BACK AWAY FROM THE GLASS BOWL! I HATE MINE! I got a new mixer when mine died. I gave the SS bowl to the woman who took my old mixer. She had hopes of fixing it. I sure wish I'd kept the bowl. The glass one is GINORMOUS and awkward to use.

This is exactly what I was thinking when Q had the recent TSV with the glass bowl and have been trying to get input on these boards from those who bought it. No responses so I was excited to see this thread. I have been looking around for a 6 Qt with stainless bowl and have found it. Although Costco has one, it has not received good reviews. I am saving my pennies for the 7 Qt commercial one at William Sonoma to replace my 5 Qt Limited Edition that is 17 years old.

I have the SS bowl & I know I would like it better then the glass bowl because it would be too heavy.

I really appreciate all you're responses. I saw the extra glass bowl at bed n bath and was a little nervous having granite counter tops that one lil bang can chip anything..... I'll stick with the stainless bowl Thank you ladies Smiley Happy

When KA first showed the glass bowl........I took one look and stated to myself that I thought that the band that was around it was a set up for problems......Could be wrong......but just my 1st thoughts........plus agree with the weight problem, and I have a muscle condition that means that I need lighter.......not heavier...........{#emotions_dlg.mellow}

Rather than worrying about my mixer looking "pretty" with a glass or metal bowl, I'm more concerned how it works. That's why I posted the info above about the dough hooks and how well they work.

Re: Kitchen aid mixer...do you prefer

I just bought a 5-quart bowl-lift KA mixer with a SS bowl. The glass bowls are pretty, but IMO the SS bowls are much more practical. My mixer has the all-metal beater, spiral hook, and whisk and looks fine with the metal bowl, but I keep it out all the time and covered with the KA mixer cover anyway.
