The typical Italian St Joseph "treat" is a pastry called "zeppola" (plural is "zeppole")  They look like this:

The fillings are generally vanilla, chocolate or ricotta.

If there is a St Joseph cookie (as you mentioned), I don't know what it is.

i too live in nyc but never heard of St Joesph or this special treat.

A coworker brought a box of these for the holiday and I asked him about it.

Fast forward a year or 2 - i went with a friend to visit her son in college located in Phil.

I saw a line at a bakery and was intrigued - it was St Joesph holiday - QUICK - let's go in and wait on line - Why? she asked - just get on line.

I got that along with other sweets - it is against the law to only buy 1 treat especially when there are no calories. I havent had them since - gosh they were good.

only thing - beware of shipping treats filled with cream - i dont think that is wise for many reasons - unless they treat it with special handling

I havent had the st jospeh pastry in the 2 places I will mention - but they ship and you can peruse their site - it looks like they have cannoli and cream separate and you put it together - i have had it in both places

Veniero's located in nyc - has great assorted pastries

Mike's Pastry in boston has lines out the door for their cannolis - their florentine and espresso ones are exceptional - no joke - google and see the assortment and lines - one of the reasons - they only fill it as you order - so the shell remains crunchy

i know you are not looking for cannolis - but i got them on my brain and it is 4am

i am drinking cold brew trying to wake up since i cant go back to sleep and i would love any kind of italian treat to go with it

Stella Doro use to make a cookie called REGINA.. it was an oval thick cookie with sesame seeds all over it. Haven't seen them in decades. Has anyone seen them. They were so good. Dunked in coffee or milk.

Re: Italian Cookies

[ Edited ]

Here in the "woods"  in upstate NY there isn't ever a "real" bakery..only the supermarkets so called "bakery".

When my kids visit they have to shop first for me!..One goes to the "real" Junior's in Brooklyn for cheesecake..The other goes to Arthur Ave. in the Bronx..for the best Italian bread and cookies..DIL stops at my favorite Italian Deli.

I always make sure I have plenty of room in my freezer in the garage.

They know if they don't bring "my stuff" don't come..LOL

@branny , Stella d'Oro used to be my favorite grocery store brand of cookie. I think they were so delicious because their sugar content was so low. Always kept some in my pantry, a perfect afternoon tea snack. I've not seen stores in my area carry them for years.

i tend to bake my own cookies and freeze them - take out a few at a time

if i were to buy - there are a few Pepperidge Farms that i like

I used to like Enterman's (cakes/cookies)

but they aren't the same or my tastes have changed
