I rarely watch Food Network anymore. So many of the shows are for entertainment (winning or eating) or basic cooking skills. I'd like to learn more about ethnic home cooking and using specialized cooking and baking equipment. YouTube seems to fill that void.

You sound like me. My Sanyo 26" tv that I had in my family room --- was 30 yrs old. People told me to buy a flat screen - but I said, there's nothing wrong with it - so I'll keep it. Finally, the audio quit (the pic was still great). That was 3 yrs ago - and I now love my 40" Samsung flat-screen tv. Purchased from costco on-line for $300. My old tv was almost $600.
In my upstairs bedroom, one of my ex-roomies moved out 9 yrs ago, and left me his tv. The sound also started going and I could barely hear some channels. Costco was selling a 24" Samsung flat-screen tv for $110. and I purchaed it. So much better.

It used to be my go to channel, not anymore. On the the weekends it's turned into the Guy Fieri Network
I watch Pioneer Woman and Trisha Yearwood.
I do enjoy the Baking Championship Shows and since they didn't bring Jeff Dunham back for the Halloween version I've been watching that.

@CLHS68 Their food may not be healthy, but they never said you have to eat those meals three times a day, 365 days a year. I'm no fan of Paula Deen, but I couldn't understand why people beat her up over her cooking style. No one ever suggested eating her meals everyday. Healthy-cooking-only shows have never succeeded on FN.

@PA Mom-mom wrote:@excpaYou are so right! I watch Ina when I happen on to it, but otherwise I don't bother. The shows that used to explain cooking techniques are now all about the "story." " My friend/sister/etc. is coming over and ....." I've been mainly watching cooking shows on PBS lately. I like the new versions of ATK and Cook's Country, and I like Lidia B.
I totally agree. There always has to be some reason they are cooking. It takies a lot of time away from the actual cooking. I really don't want to see Pioneer Woman's kids out mending fences or moving cattle a hundred more times. Trish doesn't seem to be able to cook unless someone comes over to "help" her. Guy has been over-exposed to the point that I reach for the remote as soon as I see him. All that's left is cupcake or some other kind of wars and/or Chopped with baskets of disgusting ingredientss put together that no home cook would ever make. They have ruined Food Network IMHO.

I agree. I like to watch cooking shows. Not over the top reality shows and competitions. I like Ina Garten, loved to watch Anne Burrell. Even Rachael Ray. Cooking channel used to have the how to cooking shows I like but even they have gone the way of reality shows...

I used to pretty much only watch Food Network, and HGTV ... now I don't even know what channel they are. I too, am tired of the competition shows ... and the constant repetition.
I also noticed that a lot of these shows (Fixer Upper especially) is just a commercial for their actual "brand" ...
I also watch a lot of YouTube ... Food Wishes is very good, and he has a great voice!

I gave up on the Food Network several years ago, simply because it's all competition shows and DDD. I'm not even remotely interested in the stuff on FN now and I don't know when the last time was that I watched anything on FN.
CREATE is a PBS channel. You can watch America's Test Kitchen, Cook's Country, Simply Ming, Sara Moulton, the old Julia Child shows, Martha Bakes, and other cooks who actually cook.
Some of the newer shows are excellent, too: Kevin Dundon's Modern Irish Food is excellent. So is AnnabelleLangbein's The Free Range Cook is a great show. I also like Pati's Mexican Table.
They actually cook on those shows. And they're interesting.

I still watch to some extent, but my tv is more for noise in the background than anything, no matter what channel I have on.
Anyone here remember "Door Knock Dinners"? Gordon Elliott (I think is his name) would take a chef and knock on a random door and the chef would make a dinner with what they could find in the peoples fridge, freezer and cupboards. Some of those chefs were magicians! It was really fun to watch
