I think women are using aprons more now than in the pasdt few years - a lot of women come home from work and have to start cooking and don't want to splatter their work dresses.
I actually think it's the opposite. I remember my grandmother wearing aprons a lot, and my mother wearing aprons from time to time, but I haven't seen anyone wear an apron in many years.

Why is that? I know a lot of women feel this way, but I don't really understand.
Because my once vital mom stated slopping around in her house coat. She got to where she didn't want to get dressed, hated if anyone came to see her because of the way she looked and didn't want to go anywhere. My dad got dressed when he got up every day of his life until a few weeks before he died at 96.
You need to get up and put on your clothes and get ready for whatever happens! If someone calls and invites you to come over, or go somewhere, you're good to go! I believe 1000 percent in the flylady "Put your shoes on" concept! A house coat just doesn't cut it! You just never feel as peppy and ready to do something in your house coat or gown.
I could not agree more!!

I do occasionally and others must because Williams-Sonoma sells tons of them. I have a lot of them from their sale tables and like others I got tired of ruining my clothes. I actually have one on now! LOL!!
But I don't know many people that do wear them; my mother NEVER wore one in the 50s and beyond; and my aunt did but they were the little from-the-waist-down ones.

Oh, I know that people buy them. I'm just saying that I think they are much less common now than years ago.
My mom wore the from-the-waist-down ones too, but not often. Usually just before a party when she was dressed up and doing last-minute things in the kitchen, and not always even then. And they were pretty, not utilitarian-looking at all.
I've personally never seen anyone wear anything like the one in the photo that started this post. (And I've been around a long time!)

I used to think it was because I was overweight and it just got caught there. However, I lost weight and it still lands in the same places.
I have stained so many clothes by not putting something under my chin when I eat. I'm going to get something like this for home. I'm serious.
Thanks.
It's not that you're a slob. It's that you're a woman. Tables weren't designed for women. I think all tables should be higher so our chest goes underneath. One day while we had a number of people visiting and lacking another bar height chair, I pulled up a regular dining room chair. Loved it. Now I always use a regular height chair instead of the bar height chairs at the breakfast bar.
My flat chested friends don't seem to be slobs, nor are the men.
A sewing friend made a number of large 'bibs' for me for when we eat out. Have had many favorable comments over the years from other diners as well as restaurant staff. She now makes many of them and always keeps a number in her carryout tote. She sells two or three every time we go to a restaurant.
One high end restaurant in Atlanta buys several dozen at a time to keep on hand. Said they often had customers say they wish they had a bib when eating something messy. They have the plastic 'lobster' bibs, but they don't work well - most things that drop on your chest slide right on down the thin plastic. Your blouse ends up clean, but your skirt or slacks are a mess. The ones she makes for them can easily be run through the laundry along with the tablecloths and napkins.
After some of my comments, she modified them. Now the closure tabs are at the front on either side, instead of in the back. Back closure is sometimes hard for some people, and hair gets caught. The shape is similar to a baby bib, but comes down further in front. She uses a nice, absorbent, bonded flat loop terry with a waterproof backing for some. Had her do mine in microfiber, as I know how to launder microfiber to maintain the absorbency.
As for regular aprons, same friend has made me a number. My favorites are the ones with three armholes. No need for ties or buttons at all. They're easy to slip on and off quickly, even if hands are messy. All have loops and pockets for things like spoons and the like. She also made me a number of hostess aprons that work well with dressy clothes, and cover all the way down the front.

I have a collection of the cutest aprons--all have bib tops and skirted bottoms, some with pockets. One features a Picasso, one an Eiffel tower print, a cherry print, some florals--and I wear them all--almost. It all started when my brother was a teenager, and gave me an apron for a present. It was about as old fashioned a grandma apron as he could find (it didn't look like the 'cobbler' though) in a precious blue and yellow ditsy floral print. And emblazoned across the front, in black iron on letters, his handiwork-- F%#K DINNER. I still have it and it's the jewel of my collection, even if it's usually hidden!

I have two cobbler aprons that I use over my clothes when I color my hair & when I spray it. Could not do without them!

I gave cute aprons as Christmas gifts last year. My daughter loves the one that says, "At my age I need glasses" with two sparkling wine glasses. I like the ones with one long string(?) that goes around the neck and is totally adjustable.
