Re: I can't imagine a pantry without...

I learned from my mom, who lived through the Depression, to buy in bulk and waste nothing or as little as possible.  I have not been able to break the habit of having anything possible I could need on hand  but the pantry item I will not run out of are small cans of sliced black olives.  I buy 1 or 2 cases every Fall on sale mostly for salads and Mexican recipes.  The one thing I'll never again buy in case-lot is tomato paste.  I did not pay attention to just how many of those little cans are in a case. Now I buy it in the tube for on-hand and buy a can only when it will all be used in a recipe.

One thing my mom did that I don't is buy sugar and flour in giant bags to empty into barrels that were kept just off the kitchen.  Maybe it was a habit she'd learned from working in restaurants.  I think she used the cloth bags to sew into kitchen towels.  I'm happy with 5 or 10 pound sacks.
