@4kitties .. I wasn't responding to anything about processed food but rather about the cost. I don't think you can purchase a whole chicken at the grocery store for $4.98. Plus the cost of the seasonings, etc.
I bought a 4 pound whole chicken at the grocery store today for $.99 a pound. Seasonings don't cost extra. I have plenty of seasonings,
@layla2450 Well there you have it for me! Pay that to have no mess, no wash up, no sanitizing? You bet! Especially at my lovely retired state of life. I do wash what sometimes seems tons of veggies and chop 'em up! ![]()

@4kitties, while I fully agree with you about cooking my own foods it doesn't necessarily mean we know what is in them, particularly chicken. Most grocery store chicken has been injected with a solution that is at the very least similar to the ingredients listed in a previous post for Costco (or was it Sam's?) rotisserie chickens.
Actually, a lot of grocery store meats have been treated in some way. The injection of liquids is as much to increase the weight of the cut as it is to enhance flavor or longevity.

Yes, it is sad but true. Hard to find just "plain" meat and poultry now. I know many thanksgiving turkeys are "injected" and grocery store pork too.😢😢
I buy much of my meat from a locally owned butcher store. Much better than typical grocery store meat and poultry. We also have small farms near us that sell beef and poultry. And organic veggies in the summer.

For 50 years I have cooked Bell and Evans whole chickens. I take off the plastic, put it in the roasting pan ( remove the giblets) season and bake. I have never put them in the sink to sterilize? Never have gotten sick either.
I will not eat chickens from an unknown origin nor will I eat chickens injected with sugar. Of course sugar makes anything taste delicious, thus the added ingredients.😉

There's an interesting debate about washing chicken before cooking. I never do and have never gotten sick. Not washing chicken cuts down on cross-contamination. I always make sure to thoroughly cook my chicken as well.

I hear ya.
However, I always wash my chicken to get that slimey feel and taste off - Then, I wipe my sink, faucet and counters down with a couple of Clorox Wipes.
Been doing this for years, and never experienced any cross-contamination issues or sickness as a result.
Oh, and the whole chicken I bought was $4 - Plus, I have plenty of seasoning in my cupboard, so as far as I'm concerned, the cost is the same, but I get to control the sodium, etc. ![]()

I wipe it down with paper towels. I don't want to take the chance and get it near the sink and splashing around contaminating other things.

I still roast a whole chicken. Usually for Sunday dinner. Very easy to do. Put my own seasonings in and on it.
Costco sells an inexpensive whole chicken that we buy occasionally too. Very tasty. Have to get there early or they are sold out.
As for rinsing the chicken before cooking. Yes, I have been doing it for as long as I have been cooking. Never a problem. Just clean the sink after. Not a big deal.

I don't do Sam's or Costco, but tonight i bought a 3lb juicy chicken at the local Smart & Final for $8.99.
Between that and a soup in the freezer, this should feed us for almost a week.
Just in case the fires flare up with the Santa Ana Winds and we're advised to stay home.
I'm calling this one my Emergency Chicken. It smells divine.

@Trinity11 After you take off the wrapper, you have to touch the chicken and most likely the juice will touch your hands and the sink if you take the wrapper off in the sink.
Then you have to wash and disinfect the sink, the area around the sink if any droplets splashed, the faucet handle if your chicken drenched hands touched that, and on and on. That all has to be disinfected and your hands scrubbed and scrubbed and under the nails before you touch any else.
Chicken before it is cooked is nasty and dangerous for your kitchen cleanliness.
