Re: How to keep liquids cold in Primula tumblers

i use the OWALA brand.....sip and chug style. i put all parts in the dishwasher.

it keeps ice and cold liquids for AT LEAST 24 hours.

this is why i am generally not tempted by another brand.

Re: How to keep liquids cold in Primula tumblers

Not going camping in the desert. I love your sense of humor RollTide2008. Maybe I should become Hoosier1964, Boilermaker1970, or Spartan1972. They're all appropriate for my college history and degrees.

But you're right, most of us don't need a tumbler that keeps things cold for 24 hours or more. I fill my Primula or a tumbler from another brand with cold water and ice and put it on my bedside table. As long as I have cold water to drink during the night, I'm a happy camper. During the day I refill the tumbler with water and ice to drink. When it's gone I refill it or if the ice is melted and the water no longer ice cold, I refill it.

Several have commented that ice didn't last in their Primula tumblers for 24 hours. Perhaps the ones used on the set have a tiny bit of water in the bottom of the tumbler (just enough to measure with a thermometer) and the rest of the tumbler is absolutely filled with ice or maybe they start the 24 hour period with no water, just ice. It's true also that not all ice is identical. Before I purchased my current refrigerator which dispenses ice cold water and ice, I had a countertop ice maker. Ice from that didn't stay frozen nearly as long as ice from the ice maker in my refrigerator. It's apparently more porous.

Re: How to keep liquids cold in Primula tumblers

Thanks everyone for all of your comments and suggestions.

I've been continuing to experiment and just can't achieve the promised results.  Once again today I put ice and water in the tumbler & left it sit on the kitchen table. 12 1/2 hours later, I checked it and found some ice, but not much. I checked the water temperature and found it to be 32.9 degrees, which is good. Unfortunately, it looks like there's no way I'm ever going to see the promised results of ice not melting for 24 hours unless, maybe, I fill it with nothing but ice and leave the water out.

@JeanLouiseFinch mentioned that putting the tumbler in the fridge might afftect how it performs. Well, I only tried that once, and I only had it in there for a little over 5 minutes to "prep" it before putting ice and cold water in it. All of my experiments have been with the tumbler sitting out at room temperature, and all of these experiments have failed.

Now, of course, I don't need to have it keep ice unmelted for 24 hours, I can always add more throughout the day if needed. And It does seem to keep my water cold, even without ice being present, but that's not the point. The vendor's promise is not holding true--at least not for me. I'm glad others have had better luck. Just with I had the same.

@BalletBabe --Just wondering, since you seem to be one of the lucky ones, did you put just ice or ice with water in your tumbler in order to achieve such a good outcome. (By the way, I use cubes like you, not crushed ice.) Please let me know. Thanks.

@qualityshopper - it sounds like maybe you have a defective tumbler.  Return and exchange for a replacement.

Re: How to keep liquids cold in Primula tumblers

I have a 50 oz Simple Modern tumbler that's great. I put about a liter of Pepsi (half of a two-liter bottle) in it first thing in the morning and top it off the rest of the way with ice. Around one in the afternoon, the Pepsi is gone but the ice remains and I refill it with iced tea and no new ice. That lasts me until bedtime. The next morning there will still be ice in the tumbler.

The more you open and close any container, the less effective it'll be at staying hot or cold. That's part of the reason I went with a 50 oz tumbler. It only takes one refill in the afternoon to last me all day. A smaller tumbler would need more frequent refilling.

Re: How to keep liquids cold in Primula tumblers

I have several S'Well insulated stainless steel bottles I use to keep my water cold. I won't drink if it's not cold.

I keep cold water in my refrigerator always.
