If I'm making the packs of instant microwave oatmeal, my favorite is the peaches & cream! I will substitute milk instead of water n these because it makes them taste even creamier.

I buy steel cut oatmeal in bulk. I put 1/3 cup in a large high side family size serving bowl with 3/4 cup of water and microwave for 4 minutes.
I have to use a high sided bowl or it will overflow. I don't add salt, sugar or milk. I don't like milk and never drink it.
Occasionally, I'll stir in about one tablespoon of natural peanut butter.

Can't eat oatmeal now but I did use the Steel Cut Oats cooked in water.
I like savory! Oatmeal, butter, raisins or craisins and slivered almonds were blended in. Delicious and sustaining!

I cook Trader Joe's Oven Roasted Old Fashioned Organic Oats with water in the microwave and then top with a little kerrygold butter and pure maple syrup (sometimes I add a tad bit of milk on top too)

Not to be a horrible buzz kill but I discovered this year that a lot of longevity experts now say that oatmeal isn't the health food we all thought it was and in fact most think it's quite unhealthy mostly because it's a carb that really raises (even spikes) your blood sugar and doing so first thing in the morning is even worse.
This has been a really depressing discovery for me because I love....I mean I LOVE oatmeal and have eaten it most mornings for many many years....

I cook oatmeal on the stove in water; my bowl has brown sugar and butter, NO milk.

Steel cut oatmeal does not spike blood sugar like the flat variety.
It's the only type I really like. Give them a try. Yummy.

I was talking to a friend recently and she questioned my use of whole milk. She uses instant oatmeal and water. She also adds brown sugar and nuts.
I'm thinking while the whole milk sustains me throughout the day, sugar would cause me to crash mid-morning.
It leaves me wondering how others prepare their oatmeal. If you don't mind sharing I'm curious to know.
Since whole milk has more carbs than protein, I wouldn't think of it as much of a protein source, but I'm not a milk drinker under most circumstances anyway.
I put a few tablespoons of vanilla coffee creamer in a mug. Throw in the oatmeal packet, add a hefty tbsp of whole flax seeds and then pour hot water over it, and let it sit for a minute or two.
I get high fiber, creamy oatmeal in a cup, usually the low sugar brown sugar version, or if plain I add a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.
IMO, the smidge of vanilla coffee creamer really enhances the taste.

Growing up my mother always made us oatmeal and cream of wheat adding white sugar, milk and butter. It was loose and slightly soupy. I did like it, but when I went away to college my friends just put brown sugar in the warm oatmeal and I learned to like it that rib-sticking way! I do that to this day and also add cinnamon.

Earlier this year there was a thread about "overnight" oats, which I'd never heard of. I made some for my DH and he loves them. He heats a serving up in the microwave. There are lots of recipes and ideas online.
