Re: How do you prepare your oatmeal?

I cook instant oatmeal with water in the microwave, take it out, add sugar and milk, then reheat.  I'm not fond of milk microwaved a long time.

The milk is a protein, the oatmeal a whole grain to carry you.

Glycemic index (GI) is a measure of how quickly a food can make your blood sugar (glucose) rise. Only foods that contain carbohydrates have a GI. Foods such as oils, fats, and meats do not have a GI, though in people with diabetes, they can affect the blood sugar.Nov 3, 2022

You would need to look up the glycolic index of 1 tsp of sugar and the dried fruits separately.

Re: How do you prepare your oatmeal?

I used to cook it stovetop, now it's microwave all the way.

I use Woodstock (used to be Old Wessex) 5-grain cereal, which has nothing added--it's just five grains. I usually add brown sugar and sliced blanched almonds or finely diced walnuts, and I like half and half if I have that on hand. Sometimes I'll reduce the water a bit and add frozen, mixed fruit, too.

I make the instant Peaches & Cream oatmeal and always use milk, or a combination of milk/water with mostly milk. It tastes so much richer and better to me than just water.

Re: How do you prepare your oatmeal?

Oh my gosh, I LOVE oatmeal.   When I was a little girl, my grandmother would cook it on the stove and there would always be lumps.  I used to love that!

Anyway, I mostly eat the instant these days.  My favorite is maple and brown sugar.  I find it too sweet and not enough of a portion size, so I use one pouch of that and one pouch of plain.  I mix them together and add boiling water from the stove.  Just enough to wet and mix it.  I like a super thick oatmeal, where if I turned the spoon upside down, it would stick!  I add just a touch of milk to loosen it up a bit, then enjoy.  Mmmm.  Now I'm craving oatmeal!

I've been having oatmeal most mornings and I prepare it on the stovetop, using whole milk.  The only thing I add to it is dried blueberries or raisins.

I was talking to a friend recently and she questioned my use of whole milk.  She uses instant oatmeal and water.  She also adds brown sugar and nuts.

I'm thinking while the whole milk sustains me throughout the day, sugar would cause me to crash mid-morning.

It leaves me wondering how others prepare their oatmeal. If you don't mind sharing I'm curious to know.

The only thing that would make you crash mid-morning are the raisins you add. Very high concentrated sugar content! Stick to oatmeal and a few fresh (never dried) blueberries and you'll be fine.

Re: How do you prepare your oatmeal?

I make my own oatmeal cups so I can enjoy them at home or on the go. I love the taste and texture of regular old-fashioned oats, so I typically use simple combinations such as a bit of brown sugar and cinnamon or a spoonful of dried blueberries or cranberries (sometimes indulging in the addition of a few white chocolate chips as well). I buy paperboard cups so they'll stand up to boiling water being poured in, and then I just affix the lid and wait 10 minutes or so for the water to be absorbed. I'm sure I could use hot milk, but I have never tried that and therefore haven't missed it.  Smiley Wink

@Cats3000

I'm glad it works for you.  I'm not sure if you realize how snarky your response sounded, but my oatmeal doesn't come in a "package".

Old Fashioned Oats cooked on the stove top.

I eat it plain, I don't care for flavors in it.

The instant packet stuff gives me heartburn.

Re: How do you prepare your oatmeal?

I don't like anything sweet (even fruit) added to my oatmeal.  Only a dash of salt.  I usually use Quaker's and microwave it with water.  However, it's not an every day thing for me. Cat Happy
