storm has been in San Fernando Valley for several hours, just a good rain so far, and they have posted flash flood warnings until about 8 a m PST which may mean a stronger wave arriving any minute. we need this rain desperately and it's a joy to hear it.

My iPhone starting blaring in the middle of the night - flash flood warnings. I'm not in a danger zone, but my heart goes out to those who are. It has been raining very steadily here for hours. The good news is that I was able to take my dog out so she could pee a couple of times. I was very proud of her

I heard Los Angeles has declared a state of emergency, and yesterday there was an expert voicing concern about the massive amounts of water and its effect on fault lines. Don't worry. I lived on the east coast for decades and we saw rain like this several times a year. It's just so unusual here lately. Some homes are built on or around the mountains and those are the ones in danger due to mudslides. Fortunately for me, I've never had enough money to live in those neighborhoods.

Thanks, Poodlepet. We're inland SoCal so it hasn't been drastic for us, as yet. I feel for those dealing with the flooding, and for the residents where the fires have burned out the normal protection from the ravages of flooding. It's a state of extremes here and 'part of the deal' is taking the bad with the good, but it's much harder for many others than it has been for us.
The rain here has actually been such a pleasant change. The fronds on the palm trees will all sparkle when the sun comes out again and everything will look so clean. Things get very dusty when there's no rain. More and more the people in our neighborhood have been having landscapers come in and replace their lawns with other options, usually native vegetation. I always miss the green, but it is probably the way of the future for SoCal.
Hope all is well in your neck of the woods, and that our Northeast Coasters are out of harm's way.

WOW,this all I can say..I am south of Half Moon Bay, and I have never seen such winds or rain..Have lived here for over 35 years in the redwoods,,.Lost one small tree and a tiny bush..The wind blew the tarp off of my wood pile which I had anchored with logs,,blew the car cover off of my 68 mustang, nothing major happened other than that. I have flashlights, radio, my luminara candles, lantern. This storm has been of a tropical variety with warm air,so even though I have a woodstove , have not had to have fires unless I want to.
We need the rain so bad I am not complaining. I really enjoy the rain, it has a kind of relaxing effect on me. I can catch up on reading and don't even mind losing the power, just kick back and turn my candles on and read. Not much you can do about weather so just try to enjoy.
