Re: How Often Do You Buy A Range?

A thermostat is the first thing to go.

If it is a freestanding electric, it is very simple and inexpensive to switch out.  Even I have done it.

I wouldn't move my propane line though, now that scares me.

Re: How Often Do You Buy A Range?

Next week as a matter of fact.  One burner has never worked since we moved in 5 years ago & now the burner that we use most is on it's last leg.  We finally informed our landlord he has to replace it...period.  We accepted the fact when we moved in that one wasn't working...we still had 3 others, plus a warmer burner.  But now with the second one going out, it's time to replace it.

@SurferWife  If it's an electric burner (coil type), you can simply replace it yourself at any Ace Hardware. Inexpensive and simply plug it in after removing the old one. I did that in one of our former homes decades ago. Did it before my husband returned home from work! Happy cooking.

ETA: Unplug the non-working burner and take it with you to the hardware store. They will make sure you purchase the correct one for your stove. You may end up with all burners working perfectly again for very little money or effort!!

@BirkiLady

We have a glass top "drop-in" stove/oven.  We don't have a coil type electric stove.

If your oven goes kaput, in these difficult pandemic times, why not buy a Nesco style oven (many brands, under $100) to Senate use you over?

@patbz Thanks.  I never, ever have enough countertop space.

Re: How Often Do You Buy A Range?

I moved into my brand new home in June 2001 - over 19 yrs ago. The builder put in a white GE (Spectra) range/oven and a white GE microwave (space maker) above it. Both work perfectly.

Re: How Often Do You Buy A Range?

My 15 yr old glass top electric range blew its motherboard in June. We had our kitchen plumbed for gas and I'm ecstatic about my 5 burner (oval center burner) gas range and just to be cooking with natural gas again! Not to mention, our gas/elec bill is $100 (yes!) cheaper per month than it was when we were cooking with electric. Happy in every way!

Re: How Often Do You Buy A Range?

@SurferWife  That's what I also have. Sorry you've had so much trouble. We bought stainless appliances shortly after purchasing this home in 1988 and it is the only one still working (and looking) perfectly. All others (dishwasher, microwave, wine cooler and refrigerator) have been replaced.

Those newer drop-ins are expensive and impossible to repair. Not a wise choice for a rental. Perhaps it is time for a new countertop and a less expensive free standing oven/stove model? Hope you are able to convince your landlord of the very basic need for an accurate appliance!

Re: How Often Do You Buy A Range?

When I bought my house in 2006, it was 3 years old & had a glass electric smoothtop GE range in it, but the plumbing for gas was put in by the builder so buyers could have either option.  I used the electric range for a year & it was OK (way better than the old coil type electric ones), but I learned to cook on gas & prefer it, so I replaced it with a new GE Profile gas range.  All my kitchen appliances were in bisque color which I guess was in fashion at the time, so I got the GE Profile range in bisque, which was still fairly easy to find in stores in 2007.

A few years later, I replaced my microwave/range hood combo & side by side fridge with GE Profile micro & French door fridge in bisque (to match that pesky stove!) & since GE no longer made dishwashers in bisque at that point, I got a KitchenAid dishwasher in bisque.

Fast forward to earlier this month & my micro died, so I went shopping & decided to bite the bullet & in addition to the microwave, I decided to also replace my dishwasher, because it has been acting up & both the microwave & the DW had already been repaired at least once.  So, I bought a new KitchenAid microwave & dishwasher, both in stainless steel this time & figured it would look odd with a SS micro above a bisque range (it does!), I ordered a new KitchenAid slide-in gas range. (there's no accounting for my logic!)  The microwave came in & was delivered & installed last week & the DW supposedly will be here this week & the new range shortly after.  So ¾ of my kitchen will soon be SS & ¼ will still be in bisque for a few more months, until I get a new SS KitchenAid French door fridge.

Having matching appliances wouldn't matter if my house wasn't open concept & the kitchen smack in the middle of my house, so it's glaringly obvious when something's not right.  The main reason I went with KitchenAid is that with my kitchen so open, I needed a quiet dishwasher & the KA DW had proven to be so quiet you could barely hear it running, where the old GE that was in the house when I bought it was super noisy  & sounded like a cement mixer.  I liked the KA DW well enough to take a chance on replacing my other appliances with KA, which I hope I don't live to regret!

Re: How Often Do You Buy A Range?

I purchased a new range when the older one was not working anymore and it didn't make sense to continue to repair it. When I moved into my current home I knew I would have to replace the appliances in the near term. The previous range was a JennAir convection oven/gas cooktop. The cooktop worked, but the oven was hit or miss.  After a while, I just didn't bother repairing it anymore and replaced it. The repair man said that the electronics in the oven was going to have to be replaced and it just didn't make sense spending to fix it anymore.
