Re: How Much "Dead" Space Is In Your Kitchen Cabinets?

Seeing the thread title, at first, I thought of cabinets that are empty and none of that here!  Smiley Very Happy   But, as to the 'stuff you don't use' thing - I think I have a couple of those.

I have a lot of kitchen cabinets (all full of stuff), but one of them that I keep forgetting about and actually it's mostly the top shelf, is populated with glass pieces that I can't even recall using.  In fact, there is  still a piece of tape that I put across the front of the items in the top shelf back, geez, must be at least over 15 years ago, when we were having hundreds of little earthquakes every day (and a 5+ one every now and then).

I did some of that taping and put other things on the floor, in the case of a larger earthquake.  I think most of that has been re-done since except that one top shelf of glass pieces.  I think a lot of them are wine glasses and the like.  I don't drink, or even like at all, wine.  Maybe I should give them away.  Some are antiques, though.

Re: How Much "Dead" Space Is In Your Kitchen Cabinets?

I don't use 50% of the cabinets i have in my kitchen. They are EMPTY. It's same with my closet...don't use even half of the hanging space or the shelving.

I could easily downsize to a smaller house, but we live in my husband's family home that is over 100 years old and he will not move. Sigh. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful home and I have enjoyed living here. But kids are gone and it's a lot of house to maintain.

It must be a big, lovely house, because 100 year old homes are usually short on closet space.

If only my walk-in closet could only have some dead space!

I'd say none, either in the kitchen.

@ECBG  I have that same problem with glasses & things I do not use. They are relegated to the tippy-top shelves. But I would have nothing else to squeeze up there if things were stored in a box.

What would you put there if you had the room?

Re: How Much "Dead" Space Is In Your Kitchen Cabinets?

To be honest, I have a few totally empty cabinets as well as a few almost empty cabinets in my kitchen.  And 3 totally empty drawers.

I just don't live with much "stuff".  If I don't use it, I don't keep it.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

@Harpa

I have light weight items I occasionally use in top cabinets.

This house has been remodeled many times over the years. I am thankful most of the expensive updates to plumbing and wiring were done by my in-laws a few years before we moved in. My husband tells me the current layout looks nothing like when his grandparents lived in this house. Most of the bedrooms now have good closet space. We are lucky to have more storage space than we use.

Re: How Much "Dead" Space Is In Your Kitchen Cabinets?

I would love to have "dead" space in my kitchen cabinets! I have such a small kitchen

that the few cabinets I have are filled with things I use. My seldom-used things are in my kitchen annex...the garage.  I started purging during the lockdown...mostly closets and clothes...not too much in the kitchen to toss. It is amazing how easy it is to accumulate things though, without even trying.
