Re: How Do You Fix Cube Steak?

I've never had cube steak.  What are its good points?  The price?  Taste?  Ease of preparation/recipes?

@ECBG Looks delicious.

I purchase cubed steak usually top sirloin when  on sale. It is a crock pot meal where I simply use 3 to 4  chopped onions  and put in for 3 hours on low. The meat is super tender, flavorful can be used on rice, burrito, tacos, in salad or plain. I don't brown it only and salt, pepper and the comes out rich in color almost as good as yours.  It is a great change up.

Please dont spill the nastiness over into this forum.  This kitchen forum is one where posters can come to and not have the rudeness.  Lets keep it that way.

What does it matter to anyone else how someone likes their food cooked?

Exactly.  How did this thread turn so nasty, so fast????

People (some) can be SO unpleasant.  Certainly wouldn't want to share a meal with someone like that, no matter how tasty their cooking might be.

Anyway, the OP's dish looks very good to me, got me to remembering how my mother would make cube steak.  Very similar, and we all loved it.

Cube steak is a high quality meat but needs to be tenderized.  Putting the meat through a tenderizer meant the cook didn't have to "pound" the meat before she cooked it, saving time.

Families had a tasty beef dinner with a lower cost cut.

Less tender cuts of meat are often cooked with moisture like gravy which is allowed to thicken or the crock pot.

Like other cuts of beef, nutritionally you get the B complex of vitamins as well as others.

Actually we just had it last night.  I use an enameled cast iron braiser.  Season meat with Montreal Steak seasoningand brown it in the pan with some cut up onions. Add some worstchire and steak sauce, sprinkle one packet of salt free beef boullion and maybe some soy or top with some sliced tomatoes. Cover and cook in oven at 225 degrees for about 2-2.5 hours, turning once.

Re: How Do You Fix Cube Steak?

OP, your dish looks great.  These are my favorite veggies to add to just about anything.  The degree of doneness in our house depends if DH is here or not.  He likes soft,  I like tender crisp.  Personally, I think buying meat now days is a cr*p shoot.  When I was 12 I was cooking a simple dinner for parents who worked.  Pork chops, cube steak, both were always tender.  I didn't know braising techniques back then and really didn't have to.  Now it seems most of my pork chops are tough and require braising.  Cube steak is about 50-50, tender to tough.

In this house, cube steak is browned quickly, topped with a lid and steamed till done, white gravy is made in that skillet and served with hot biscuits, fried apples or fried peaches.

@RedTop

You probably make your white gravy from scratch and I bet it's delish. When my husband was doing shopping/cooking he came home w/ some white gravy in a package. Oh my goodness was it good. I would have never thought to purchase that product and now I crave it. Smiley Happy So when we have ground sirloin, I top it w/ that packaged white gravy, mushrooms and onions. I bet it would be great w/ cubed steak as well.
