How Do You Clean A French Press Coffee Pot???

I've only used mine twice and am ready to get rid of it, what a mess!

Those grounds will not come out of the bottom of the pot no matter how hard I pound or hit it.  They are too wet.  I have to try and scrape them out and it is awful.

Do you think I could put a paper filter in the bottom, before I add the coffee, and then when done just take it by the sides and lift it out?

Otherwise this is going to Good Will.  The coffee wasn't even that great.

Thanks!

@HerRoyaLioness,   I purchased a Bonavita 5 cup coffee maker (they do offer larger) last year and received the referral from someone on this board.  It makes delicious cups of coffee.  I thought I was drinking coffee from the coffee shops.  I bought mine at Wayfair.

I've used a Bodum French press pot for years. Not sure I understand your problem. I dump used grounds in the trash and wash pot with soap and hot water or put in dw. Easy.  I like French press coffee because it's unfiltered and much more like the rich coffee that we love when are in Scandinavia.

@libbyannE- I can't get those wet coffee grounds out of the bottom of the coffee pot after the coffee has been made and no more coffee is in the pot, just the grounds, they stick in there and won't come out.  I don't know how else to say it.

I've tried to hit  the bottom of the pot while upsidedown and the grounds will not come out.  I can't dump them in the garbage - they cling to the pot something fierce!

I'm so dumb I have no clue what a French Press machine is - (but that's beside the point)    Giving to Good Will may not be such a good idea because people who are steady customers of GW probably won't know what it is - but may buy it - and have the same problem you are having.  GW customers often don't have much money, so why offer them something they won't be able to use - or  (like you have experienced) can't get the grounds out..  I throw stuff in the trash all the time to prevent good $$$ going after a bad product.  Just my thoughts.

@Dinaki- thank you - I will try what the video showed, although then I have a strainer to clean!  I think I may try some sort of filter also.

I know there are a lot of people love their french press pots, so I will give it a couple more tries.

RoyalLioness, I watched the "youtube" video and that method would work, but I think what you might have is a case of too fine a grind of your coffee grounds.  That will let it pack so tightly in the bottom of the press it's hard to get it out.  You can scrape it out with a rubber spatula, or do the rinse/strain method the video shows, but if you grind your beans more coarsely, you will probably find it comes out of the pot easier.  Hope this helps!

Re: How Do You Clean A French Press Coffee Pot???

We love our French press. We just dump it out in the trash and whatever is stuck we use a long wooden spoon to scoop them out. Than wash with soap and water and the grinds are gone. Don’t worry about getting every single grind. It’s ok if some go down the drain, they won’t hurt your sink.

I dont know why they would be stuck. But if they are have you tried soaking with a little soap?

Re: How Do You Clean A French Press Coffee Pot???

@CamilleP- I will for sure try that as the coffee I had was already ground.  I do have some whole beans and a coffee grinder, so we'll see if that makes it easier.  Thanks!

@SandPiper- I got a few grounds out by trying to dump it in the garbage, but the rest I had to take a spatula to, very messy, and I did not aim for no grounds left, just wanted most of them out before I washed it with soap and water.
